Giraffa (scientific name: Giraffa), also known as kirin deer, is a mammal belonging to the genus Artiodactyla, which lives in Africa and is the tallest mammal in the world. The genus is currently considered to consist of only one species, with the only remaining Nubian giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) as the type species, but the extant giraffes can be subdivided into one to eight species using different methods of analysis. In addition, fossils of seven extinct giraffes have been found. Giraffes are distinguished by long necks, long legs, bony bony horns, and their characteristic hair pattern. Its closest genetic cousin, the okapi, is also a member of the family giraffe. The giraffe ranges from Chad in the north, South Africa in the south, Niger in the west, and Somalia in the east. It often lives in sparse grassland or sparse forest. They feed on the leaves, fruits and flowers of woody plants, mainly the Mimosa subfamily, and their long necks allow them to eat plants that other animals cannot reach. They may also be prey for lions, leopards, spotted hyenas and African wild dogs. Giraffes are social animals, with female deer with young and unrelated adult males both tending to form separate groups, although they are social and sometimes gather in larger groups. The male uses the neck jab (a battle in which the neck is used as a weapon) to establish a social hierarchy, and the winner gets to mate with the female. The sole responsibility of a female deer is to raise her young. With its unique appearance and behavior, giraffes have been an integral element of various cultures from ancient times to the present, often appearing in paintings, books, and comics. It is considered vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is locally extinct in some areas. Giraffes are regular visitors to many national and theme parks, and as of 2010 there were more than 1,600 giraffes in zoos. As of 2015, there were an estimated 97,500 giraffes in the world.
