Through the Open Palo Duro FB group, we worked with Palo Duro Canyon State Park and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to obtain a special use permit to make the hike to the Utah Slots in the restricted area of the park. The hike was a complete success. We're now going to go work with the state and the park to implement a type of permit system to make hikes like this possible more often.

From the first day until my last day the site was closed due to smoke from burning vegetation. Just as I was turning in my rental car to come home empty handed, they opened the trails. Thank God I was able to delay my flight a day and get another car. I spent 16 hours exploring the lava and volcano and taking photos and videos. This was one of the most incredible nature experiences I've ever witnessed. And I've witnessed some doozies.

This was the night after when they reopened the trails after a few days of waiting for smoke to clear. It was an incredible experience!

While exploring a new ranch road that we helped scout out, my 1987 Suzuki Samurai had trouble going up this hill with its street tires. I quickly returned with some all-terrain tires. In honor of inspiring the upgraded tires, we named this hill Sam Hill. Short for Samurai Hill.

We've been dropping the spider for 20 years and we always get kids to cry. This is a particularly good exchange from way back in 2012.
