Removing Barnacles from the shell of SEA TURTLES in Mexico and Spain
There are people who, with actions that seem small, do a lot, such as these people who cleaned sea turtles from marine cirripeds or barnacles and even crabs and plastic, leaving them clean of barnacles and plastic, avoiding all the damage they do to the body. It shows that there really is a link that unites every living being.

Seven different species of sea (or marine) turtles grace our ocean waters, from the shallow seagrass beds of the Indian Ocean, to the colorful reefs of the Coral Triangle and the sandy beaches of the Eastern Pacific. While these highly migratory species periodically come ashore to either bask or nest, sea turtles spend the bulk of their lives in the ocean. WWF's work on sea turtles focuses on five of those species: green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, and olive ridley.
Over the last 200 years, human activities have tipped the scales against the survival of these ancient mariners. Slaughtered for their eggs, meat, skin, and shells, sea turtles suffer from poaching and over-exploitation. They also face habitat destruction and accidental capture—known as bycatch—in fishing gear. Climate change has an impact on turtle nesting sites; it alters sand temperatures, which then affects the sex of hatchlings. Nearly all species of sea turtle are now classified as endangered, with three of the seven existing species being critically endangered.
WWF is committed to stopping the decline of sea turtles and works for the recovery of the species. We work to secure environments in which both turtles and the people that depend upon them can survive.

The Sound of False Killer Whales (Hunting) - in São Miguel, Azores
Being in the right place at the right moment means almost everything when it comes to witnessing natural events. Azores Islands are indeed one the rightest places to be if you wish to observe whales and dolphins and their behavior, and this video captured by Terra Azul crew proves it once again!
Terra Azul guests and crew were just a few miles offshore Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel Island, when they encountered a pod of about hundred False Killer Whales (Pseudorca crassidens). Suddenly, part of the group dove and we could see large chunks of fish intestine emerging from the depths. When the whales surfaced again, their excitement became evident as they started feeding off the large swordfish that they just killed. What an impressive view!
False Killer Whales (Pseudorca crassidens) are top oceanic predators known for attacking large pelagic fish such as sharks, tunas, dolphin fish and marlins. Similarly to the closely related Killer Whales (Orcinus orca), they share the spoil of their preys between the individuals of the pod, a behavior that is quite unique among cetaceans but is well documented in many carnivorous mammal species.

Swimming with a giant Hammerhead Shark
Meet our Partner of the Month — One Ocean Diving!
As we continue to learn more about the Hawai'ian Islands and the effects of plastic pollution, we are working with local partners to support cleanup and community outreach initiatives that have existed on the islands. So this month, we’re donating $1 to our friends at One Ocean Diving for every Hammerhead Shark Bracelet sold!
One Ocean Diving, Research & Conservation is a Hawai'i-based organization that funds crucial marine research and conservation initiatives while raising awareness about the importance of protecting sharks and other marine life.
Together, we'll help fund crucial research, education, and protection initiatives that advance shark conservation globally 🦈 🌎

Whale Shark Encounter Off Bali Coast
It's International Whale Shark Day so we wanted to share a special memory with the clean ocean movement.
Back in December 2020, our crews in Bali came across a whale shark while cleaning in the Pebuahan Ocean, about 3 km off the coast of Jembrana.
While whale sharks may be the biggest fish in the sea, they are most threatened by the ocean's tiniest plastic particles: microplastic.
As filter feeders, whale sharks suck in thousands of cubic meters of seawater every day, which leaves them extremely vulnerable to ingesting microplastics, especially in areas engulfed with plastic debris, like where our crews spotted this whale shark.
Sightings like these remind us why it's so important to continue fighting the ocean plastic crisis every single day.

Plastic Pollution in Guatemala from Heavy Rains
Mounds of plastic are piling up on the coast of Guatemala!
What's happening here?
➡️ In Guatemala, there’s just one official basurero (landfill) for the entire country in the nation’s capital of Guatemala City. Over a third of the country’s total trash ends up in the Guatemala City basurero each year, but not all of it stays there.
During the rainy season, trash from the city’s basurero gets washed into the Rio Motagua - Guatemala’s longest river that runs about 300 miles from the remote central highlands to the Gulf of Honduras in the Caribbean.
The trash that enters the Motagua pours out of the river into the Gulf Of Honduras, where ocean currents deposit it back onto Guatemala’s coast.
This situation is real. Recent heavy inland rains are creating this endless stream of plastic pollution and our Guatemala cleanup crews have been hard at work cleaning it up, while we've been simultaneously exploring locations in the river to install a boom system to stop trash before it ever reaches the ocean.
