Given that everyone can now become an information provider on social media, even a soldier's tiniest act can be filmed by locals and made available online for later judgment. However, the availability of information, which serves as a double-edged sword, has also facilitated the spread of propaganda and disinformation about the war, says Song Xin, a former policy advisor at the European Parliament.
Furthermore, citizens on the Russian and Western sides, due to the distinction between the media that they usually access, may form opposing opinions about what is happening on the ground.
