14. One of the largest, best known and most often cited veterinary cancer registries is the California Animal Neoplasm Registry (CANR). For 3 years after 1963, data were collected from a well-defined study area, recording more than 30,000 malignant neoplastic cases on which histopathology was performed free of charge [2] (Dorn CR, Taylor DO, Frye FL, Hibbard HH: Survey of animal neoplasm in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, California. I. Methodology and description of cases. J Natl Cancer Inst. 1968, 40: 295-305.)
15. One study used a database with nearly 20 years of data to attempt to make some assessment of trends over time (See charts). Six thousand seven hundred and forty-three tumor biopsy specimens were received from local veterinarians in the Municipality of Genoa between 1985 and 2002. Three thousand and three hundred and three (48.9%) biopsy specimen samples were diagnosed as cancer (Merlo DF, Rossi L, Pellegrino C, Ceppi M, Cardellino U, Capurro C, Ratto A, Sambucco PL, Sestito V, Tanara G, Bocchini V.
