The Irish Wolfhound is a historic sighthound dog breed from Ireland that has inspired literature, poetry, and mythology due to its presence and size. It, like all sighthounds, was used to chase game at high speeds; it was also well-known as a guard dog, specializing in wolf protection and hunting.
Recent genetic research has classified the modern breed as the Sighthound United Kingdom Rural Clade (Fig. S2),[5] and it is used by coursing hunters who prize it for its ability to dispatch game caught by other, faster sighthounds.
The Irish Guards adopted the Irish Wolfhound as their regimental mascot in 1902.
