The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a large bear found in Eurasia and North America. Brown bear populations in North America are known as grizzly bears, while the subspecies that lives in Alaska's Kodiak Islands is known as the Kodiak bear. It is one of the largest living terrestrial Carnivora members, rivaled in size only by its closest relative, the polar bear (Ursus maritimus), which is much less variable in size and slightly larger on average. Parts of Russia, Central Asia, the Himalayas, China, Canada, the United States, Hokkaido, Scandinavia, Finland, the Balkans, the Picos de Europa, and the Carpathian region are all part of the brown bear's range. Several states have designated the brown bear as a national and state animal.
