Immigrants Speak Week 9: Survivor of the Cambodia Khmer Rouge Genocide Warns: It Can Happen Here

Channy is a survivor of the Communist Cambodia (Khmer Rouge) that killed at least two million Cambodians. She was 13 years old when the killing started. She endured four years of starvation, labor camps, and physical and emotional torture. She arrived in the US as a refugee, attended high school; earned double BS degrees in mathematics and Computer Science, and a MS in Applied Mathematics from Santa Clara University. Channy worked in Silicon Valley as an engineer in the Aerospace and Biotech industries for 30 years before shifting her focus to publishing her award-winning memoir, Short Hair Detention. Channy presently owns and operates Angkor Cambodian Food - an ingredient manufacturing company and Angkor Chef - a Cambodian restaurant serving individuals and corporate catering orders in Silicon Valley.

Today Channy shares with us her gut-wrenching story of surviving the 4 years of communist rule by Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot in Cambodia. While many people at that time believed that Cambodia would never turn communist, it happened overnight, and millions of people were slaughtered. It is a warning that history can and will repeat itself if people do not learn from it. #communism #khmerrouge #genocide #polpot
