North Korea unveils nuclear-armed submarine

North Korea has unveiled its brand new ‘tactical attack submarine,’ which Kim Jong Un says will help the country to become an ‘advanced maritime power.’ The submarine, dubbed the ‘Hero Kim Kun Ok,’ was on display at a military ceremony on Wednesday, as reported by state media KCNA, with Kim and various top defense officials in attendance.

According to a speech by Kim, the sub is part of a bigger ‘strategic and tactical plan to continuously enhance the modernity of underwater and surface forces, and push forward with the nuclear weaponization of the Navy.’ The introduction of the new vessel comes after Washington announced it would station its own nuclear submarine off the coast of South Korea for the first time since 1981. In response, Pyongyang has warned that the move will ‘bring the regional military tension to a more critical state and may incite the worst crisis of nuclear conflict in practice.’
