Father on trial for making son run himself to death on treadmill
A New Jersey father is on trial for murder for allegedly making his 6-year-old son run himself to death on a treadmill. Corey Micciolo was subjected to a brutal workout session by his father, Christopher Gregor, who thought his young son was ‘too fat.’ In a horrifying video, Gregor can be seen putting Corey on a treadmill, and increasing the speed to the point he’s barely keeping up at a full sprint. Corey flew off. Gregor simply picked him up and put him back on, holding him up. Corey fell again. And again. At one point he fell directly on his chest. And again. And again. Legs shaking, and with his father finally lowering the speed, he got on again, and was forced to keep running. Two weeks later, Corey would be dead.
Corey awoke from a nap, slurring his words and feeling sick. He was taken to hospital, but died, with an autopsy revealing blunt-force trauma to the chest, and lacerations on his heart and liver, had caused his death. Forensic experts found other signs consistent with a history of chronic abuse. Gregor, who is facing up to life in prison if convicted, has denied the abuse, and claims that his son died of pneumonia.

Mayor accidentally livestreams bridge collapse during flood
As Brazil’s state of Rio Grande do Sul braced itself for deadly storms, the mayor of the municipality of Santa Tereza, Gisele Caumo, took to Instagram to livestream a warning to stay safe and to detail her administration’s preparations for the flooding. As her message was coming to a close, she motioned to the swelling Arroio Marrecão river behind, and with almost perfect cosmic timing, the bridge she was standing next to was lifted off its foundations and carried away in the torrent.
However, the rains did more than wash away a bridge. A hydroelectric dam burst near the city of Bento Gonçalves, causing a two-meter wave to spread chaos in the already-flooded region. More than 30 are thought to have died, 60 more remain missing, 15,000 have been forced to evacuate and 500,000 have been left without power and clean water.

China launches sea trials for cutting-edge ‘Fujian’ aircraft carrier
China’s first homegrown aircraft carrier, the Fujian, has been launched for sea trials, according to Chinese state media. The Fujian, China's first indigenously designed and produced aircraft carrier, has been in development since June 2002. At 80,000 metric tons in displacement and 316 meters in length, it dwarfs China’s two other aircraft carriers – the Shandong and Liaoning – which were both bought from Ukraine in 1998. If the sea trials are successful, the Fujian could enter service as early as next year. This first stage is set to test the ‘reliability and stability of the carrier’s propulsion and electric power systems.’

UCLA pro-Palestine camp dismantled, over 100 arrests made
Cleanup crews are removing what had been a camp for the protesters at the University of California Los Angeles. Hundreds of protesters had defied orders to leave the camp, set up to protest Israel’s continued war in Gaza. The remaining protesters formed human chains in an attempt to stop authorities moving in, and in response the police used flash-bangs and other means to disperse the crowds.
At least 132 people were arrested at the camp, which had seen several nights of clashes as attempts were made to clear the area. On Wednesday morning, pro-Israel protesters reportedly armed with sticks and pepper spray attempted to dismantle the camp, leading to further tensions.
Similar protests are ongoing around the US, as demonstrators call on universities to cut ties with Israeli companies.

Russian drone footage of strike destroying German-made IRIS-T missile launcher
The Russian Ministry of Defense has released footage of a German-supplied IRIS-T anti-aircraft missile launcher being destroyed by a Russian drone-guided strike. The IRIS-T launcher was spotted, barely, in the Kharkov region, near Ostroverkhova, and destroyed by two high-powered strikes, speculated to be from a Tornado-S artillery system. The strike obliterated the launcher itself, its command-and-control vehicles, and triggered the detonation of nearby ammunition, setting fire to a storage depot.

India tests next-gen torpedo release system
India has tested a new missile-assisted torpedo, according to the country’s defense ministry. In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry explained that the new tech is intended to boost the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine capabilities ‘far beyond the conventional range of a lightweight torpedo,’ with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh adding that the system will ‘further enhance the strength of the Navy.’
The new missile is able to travel up to 643 km, releasing a torpedo into the water with a 20 km range, armed with a 50 kg warhead.

Man screams he has child left alone at home as he's packed into van by drafters
Footage has been shared online of what appears to be Ukrainian conscription officers attempting to force a man into a vehicle in broad daylight. The footage was reportedly filmed in Odessa and shows a middle-aged man furiously struggling to break free from two officers, alerting passersby with his shouts for help. Eventually, the officers appear to give up after the man shouts that his child has been left home alone, shrugging as he runs away.
The footage has raised concerns about the tactics used by Kiev to conscript new soldiers, and footage of similar incidents has been published, which appear to show men being forcibly recruited. However, recruitment officials have denied that the man was being conscripted, claiming that the man was an existing recruit who ‘escaped while undergoing a medical examination.’

Ukraine cuts education in Russian despite language’s popularity
Kiev's commissioner for linguistics has accused Russia of attacking its language, demanding the Ukrainian government to be more aggressive in promoting Ukrainian nationalism. Over the past two years, the number of Russian language schools in Ukraine has been reduced from 29 to 3. We hear from Finnish journalist Janus Putkonen, who says that so-called Ukrainization is a means for Kiev to control ethnic Russians.

The 360 View | Is it time for GITMO to close?
Called the Gulag of our time, the detention facilities in the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base have been where the US Defense Department has detained and interrogated those deemed extraordinarily dangerous and liable to prosecution for war crimes. On this edition of The 360 View, Scottie Nell Hughes and a panel (the host of the Steve Gill Show and political commentator Steve Gill and investigative journalist Andy Worthington) look at whether the US can justify the continued operations of the military prison at GITMO.
