A heated British TV debate on structural misogyny took a turn for the ironic when one of the panelists found out her male opponent was being paid… but she wasn’t. Moya Lothian-McClean, contributing editor at the far-left Novara Media, was arguing with right wing GB News contributor Connor Tomlinson in a Sky News debate that society was structured to favor men. After Lothian-McClean claimed it was ‘tiring’ to have to keep trying to explain sexism to men, Tomlinson asked ‘you’re so exhausted to be paid to go on air?’ Her reply, with almost perfect comic timing: ‘I’m not getting paid for this. Are you getting paid for this?’

It later emerged that Tomlinson had been offered a £200 ($240) appearance fee to take part in the debate, while Lothian-McClean had not been informed at all that there would be a fee, and it’s unclear if she would have received one had she not found out on air. She took to social media to highlight the situation and demand she receive the same fee as Tomlinson, which she would donate to the charity ‘Beyond Equality.’ Sky News later apologized to Lothian-McClean, and paid her the same fee as Tomlinson. Both fees, however, were reduced to £75 ($90), for reasons no one seems to understand.

Strangely, the media fallout appeared to land squarely on Tomlinson for receiving the fee, rather than the news channel, the news program, or its female anchor. In his defense, Tomlinson took to social media to explain that he only received an appearance fee because he asked directly. Lothian-McClean later clarified on social media that she had not asked about a fee at all. Tomlinson has since launched an official complaint to media regulator Ofcom over the incident.
