A Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputy was released from the hospital Sunday night after being shot during a traffic stop earlier in the day. Deputy Evan Cubbage was hit three times during an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, who was killed. The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting. A second deputy involved in the shooting was not injured. “This traffic stop highlights the danger that our deputies face day in and day out,” Sheriff Kristin Graziano said. “They have to put themselves in harm’s way. We are very fortunate that these two deputies survived this incident.” Deputy Cubbage conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle shortly before 3:45 p.m. at 4915 Savannah Highway near Ravenel. The second deputy arrived a short time later to provide backup. During the encounter, the passenger of the vehicle opened fire on the deputies, and Cubbage was struck. The deputies returned fire, hitting the man, who died at the scene. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will identify the man when appropriate. The female driver of the vehicle was detained. Deputy Cubbage was transported to MUSC for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. F
