Footage has emerged of what appears to be Israeli guards violently blocking Muslim worshippers during Ramadan prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem. The video was reportedly filmed at the entrance to the Haram al-Sharif mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount. Worshippers can be seen fleeing, chased by Israeli guards wielding batons, some of whom can be seen beating people as they run away. Following the incident, Muslims who were refused access to the mosque were pictured praying in the surrounding streets.

Israeli police have responded to the video, saying they were working to ‘enable freedom of worship on the Temple Mount while at the same time ensuring safety and security, in accordance with instructions given by the political leadership’. They did not clarify those instructions, but the police had previously been reported as saying they were planning to limit attendance ‘in the initial stage’ of Ramadan.
