Every driver should keep these things the vehicle trunk. These are items you would use for an emergency, for safety, and even just for convenience, like a blanket when you're driving in really cold conditions and just need something across your lap if the heat isn't working well.

Safety items are essential: a vest, a tire gauge, cones, flares, and other items may never be used, which would be great, but they are the kinds of things that when you need them, you really need them.

Also don't forget to put some peppermints and granola bars into your glove compartment for use in case you become drowsy and aren't able to pull over because of weather or locale. Usually eating those will give you a lift and keep you alert until you're able to pull over safely.
