Here's a pretty common question that comes up: "How can I get a website for free?" or "How can I set up an online business for free?" I get where some people are coming from: They want to keep their costs as low as possible, at least while they're starting out.

But at the same time, this is business we're talking about here, right? Like, maybe you have dreams of launching a new brand or some kind of killer app or who knows what. And the truth is, business requires investment.

Instead of seeing things from the perspective of "What can I get for myself," see it through the lens of an investor. What every investor looks for is what's called asymmetrical risk. That is, very little downside and almost unlimited upside.

But at the same time, they still have to put some skin in the game...they have to do their research and their due diligence, and then put their money on the table and go with the investments that they think are solid.

Business is very similar. And so's your online business website. You're going to have to invest...specifically, you're going to have to invest your money and your time.

Where it becomes asymmetrical though is that you only need to invest a little bit of money to get started and a lot of your time, energy, and effort. So is it possible to set up a free website? Sure.

Just use TypePad or WordPress.com or some low quality service from a small country from the former USSR. Your site will be riddled with ads, no one will take you seriously, and it'll be near-impossible to build trust and credibility within your market...but hey, you'll have a free website!

Instead, for around $10 a month, you can have a totally pro website. To say it directly, don't be cheap. It's $10 a month! If you really, truly want to run a successful online business, then you're going to have to put some skin in the game.

Success in business or in life doesn't come freely or cheaply. If you really, truly want to build your online business, then take it seriously!
