Joe Biden is a few short weeks away from performing in front of the largest audience of his Presidency when he debates Donald Trump on CNN June 27th. Ubisoft announced the latest iteration in the Assassin's Creed franchise with Shadows, set in Feudal Japan, a long requested setting for the series and they did it in the most Ubisoft way possible. Instead of giving you a traditional Shogun/Samurai/Ninja story, they decided to cherry-pick a fringe and historically inaccurate tale about a Black Slave named Yasuke for DEI points and pair him with a female Shinobi. The backlash has been intense from the predictable sources as much as the defense for the woke choices has been. But if you look at the Japanese response, the term "cultural appropriation" is being thrown back in Ubisoft's French-Canadian faces. Square Enix just sounded the alarm on the gaming industry and announced a plan to right the ship before it sinks. Disclosing in their End of Fiscal Year 2023 report that they had taken a substantial profitability hit, several changes are incoming for the Final Fantasy developer. First and foremost, completely restructuring and reworking their Western Studios. Many layoffs are expected and needed, if we are being honest. Most of the brand damage has been done from these offices, so to have the Japanese assume full control can only improve their output. Secondly and the much better news, exclusivity is being scrapped for a multiplatform approach. Gone are the days of Sony getting the right of refusal and sales being hampered by their lackluster console sales, a wider net can now be cast to get their products out to the biggest audience possible. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth and Part 3 might well be tethered to existing deals, but this is overall good news for Square Enix and the industry at large. Unlike the failed Hobbit trilogy, this multi-part deal appears to have afforded time to plan for Jackson and crew, but one question hangs over all of this: are these stories necessary? The Lord of the Rings trilogy is the greatest story every committed to film. What made that series so great was the greatest confluence of talent the world had ever seen and trying to chase that high once more is a fool's errand. Is it doomed to fail? Absolutely not. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is one of, if not the biggest flops in gaming history. Warner Brothers Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed that not only did the name miss all conceivable sales projections, it cost the embattled company upwards of $200 Million. Sony and Microsoft are vying for the title of most anti-consumer gaming company in the world right now. Sony trying to make their PSN Accounts happen on PC is causing the Ghost of Tsushima Steam release to be banned in nearly 200 countries. If they keep up this behavior, future PlayStation releases might have a tough time getting access to the largest PC gaming store online. Microsoft is closing studios left and right. Tango Gameworks, one of the casualties of the recent closures, would perfectly fit the bill of what major players in the biz are looking for.
