Wouldn't it be nice if you launched a project and overnight it took off? I'm sure you've heard those stories and hope lightning will strike you. Maternity leave as a mompreneur looks a lot different from working in an office. Being a mompreneur means juggling the responsibilities of running a business and raising a family. Taking maternity leave as a mompreneur can be especially challenging. But you need to recover. Remember, you have a dinner plate size wound inside of you. If everyone saw the same wound on your leg, they would demand that you rest. Homeschool moms are just so patient. They are always happy. And everyone who homeschools lives on a homestead and plays in the dirt. Have you heard these homeschool myths? For this momtrepreneur life coffee chat we are my busting some common homeschool myths. Grab your coffee and let's talk about a few homeschooling myths. Persistent Homeschool Myths There are more persistent myths than others. You know they ones that are urban legend now. That are continuously being repeated although they've been totally debunked….again and again and again. 1. Homeschool moms are extremely patient No, we actually aren't. We just don't have the patience to carpool, and then do homework after they were already in school for 7 hours. It doesn't take7 hours to learn. Break down the time that is spent on everything else. They aren't learning for 7 hours. 2. We are always happy This is hard, it isn't always easy. No, I am not always a happy mom, but there is more fulfillment in what I do as a mom and homeschool mom. This homeschool myth that we are always happy, or on the opposite end, that we are just trudging through the day is not true. There is more fulfillment and joy in being with my kids and knowing my kids than in any job I've ever had or ever will have. 3. We all live on homesteads and play in the dirt Yes, some do but not everyone. There thing about homeschool is we have a lot of freedom to choose the lifestyle we want for our family. 4. We all wear khakis and polos tucked in or dresses This is a big no. There is a very small, tiny group that may fit this description. But this is not the majority of homeschoolers. The majority of homeschoolers actually wear our day pajamas. We have night pjs and day pjs. 5. You can't homeschool high school This is a homeschool myth that needs busting. I am a homeschool high school graduate, and I am going to graduate my son this year. You can homeschool high school. You don't need an accredited school either. I need to homeschool and work. There is a client needing attention. The house must be immaculate. I have all of these things that I need to do. How do you handle all your mom roles? I had it all planned out. I knew exactly how we would do homeschool dual enrollment. It was working great. Until the school changed the program, communicated very poorly on the changes, and I was back down the rabbit hole looking for schools. College dual enrollment is exactly what it sounds like. Your high school student is taking college classes while in high school. Pretty simple. This is a great way to get your student started on college while still in high school. When my oldest son graduates next year, he will have about 40 college credits. He will need one more year to complete his associate's degree. As a mom working from home and homeschooling my kids are all unique. A one-size fits all approach has never worked. I homeschool so I can tailor curriculum and learning for each child. Sometimes that means I outsource teaching, so my kids can have a better learning experience, or they can follow their interests. Use online classes 1. For interest subjects One of the strengths of homeschooling is we don't have to lock into just one curriculum or topic. We get the opportunity to explore any idea that sparks our interest…I'm mean our kids interests. Let's face it. The things that make them curious may not interest us. And that's ok. Self-paced classes are a great way to feed your child's curiosity without you needing to be the center of it. Mr. D Math has a wide variety of classes from American Sign Language to dance, and a lot in between. 2. For extra help It is ok to admit that you can't remember anything from high school algebra or chemistry. Now if you need to understand the complex context of events in history, I am your woman. But math and science, the kids will need to Google it. For learning something new The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know. We don't know what our kids will be interested in if we don't try it. Online classes are a great way to feed your child's curiosity and introduce them to subjects they never even thought about. We can't know everything…but don't tell the kids that. But we can show them how to learn something new. Being a life-long, independent learner is knowing how to find the right information as well as knowing all the facts. My daughter has never expressed an interest in learning American Sign Language. It wasn't something at the top of our to do list. But once she started the ASL I class from Mr. D Math. She was completely hooked. "The teacher is great. She teaches signs that you will actually use in a conversation. The projects are easy to complete." After starting the class, she decided this would be her foreign language credit for high school. This gives your homeschool high school transcript a boost, and it takes the stress out of adding one more high school student to the mix.
