The Brooklyn Bridge and the Gilded Age
The Brooklyn bridge represented the growth and might of the industrial age, and the coming of age of the United States, and its largest city. There is much that can be said of the Brooklyn bridge, but, marvel that it is, it also represented the novel challenges of an era of massive change, many contradictions, and magnificent architecture.

Mustache Petes, Young Turks, and The Commission
In 1928 Joe “The Boss” Masseria, boss of the New York Morello gang, took the title "capo dei capi," or "Boss of all Bosses.": But being on top paints a target on your back, and by 1930 a new boss had entered the field, with the goal of taking down Masseria. The war that followed was not your typical mob war, but one that would result in transforming the leadership, and changing the very nature, of organized crime in America, leading to one of the most significant events in American mob history: the founding of the “Commission”

Next Exit: A History of Roadside Attractions
At countless stops along the old highways travelers could find all manner of attractions like the “World’s Largest Ball of Paint”, “Cadillac Ranch”, and “The Thing”, giving birth to an entire culture of kitsch, monuments to the mammoth, and shrines to the strange. The history of these roadside attractions - or less charitably, tourist traps - predates even the highways they dotted.

Panfilov's 28 Guardsmen and The Battle of Moscow
Featuring SABATON and their new single "Defense of Moscow."
https://music.sabaton.net/DefenceOfMoscow
The Battle of Moscow was truly epic in scope, and represented a desperate effort by a people defending their homeland. One of the great legends of the battle- the brave last stand of Panfilov’s Twenty-Eight Guardsmen, stands as a symbol of the sacrifice of the soldiers of the Red Army in the Great Patriotic War, and the story of that legend raises unique questions about the nature of heroism, and the importance of legends themselves.

Reinheitsgebot: Bavarian Beer Laws
Signup for your FREE trial to The Great Courses Plus here: http://ow.ly/EBlK30rGZZM
There are more than 8200 craft breweries in the United States. But it is a strange irony of the history of beer that, in sixteenth century Bavaria, such adulterations of brew were banned in a proclamation that still affects the industry today. The 1516 Reinheitsgebot, or “beer purity law," deserves to be remembered.

The Great Guns of the Siege of Kimberley
In their initial offensive of the Second Anglo-Boer War, the Boer armies quickly overran parts of the British territories of Natal and Cape Colony, besieging three strategically important towns. The defense of the Cape Colony city of Kimberly resulted in a surprising arms race and the employment of unique, and startlingly large for the era, pieces of artillery.

Canada, the Great War, and Flanders Fields
Canadians would distinguish themselves in the Great War, and the words of Canadian John McCrae would come to, perhaps more than any other, encapsulate the sacrifice of the soldiers of that war. The story of one of the most important poems about war ever written deserves to be remembered.

Loch Ness Outdone: Rediscovery of the Coelacanth
In 1938 a fisherman in South Africa caught a fish thought to have been extinct for more than fifty million years. The amazing discovery shocked and thrilled the world, challenged our understanding of species and evolution, and gave new meaning to the term "forgotten history."

The History of Orthodontics
A 2013 study commissioned by the American Association of Orthodontists found that more than a third of Americans are unhappy with their smile. But the quest for straighter teeth isn’t just a modern one, as the history of humans trying to correct malpositioned teeth goes back to antiquity. The surprisingly long history of orthodontics is history that deserves to be remembered.

Orphan Trains
The five decades between 1800 and 1850 saw the United States beginning a massive societal shift toward urbanization, especially in the North East. One result was the proliferation of orphans and runaways living on city streets. One man stepped up to try to solve the problem with an idea that would eventually affect nearly a quarter million orphans

The Powhatten Disaster
The week of Easter, 1854, a powerful nor'easter, that peculiar type of storm that occurs in the North Atlantic caused when a cold air mass from Canada runs into warm gulf stream current, struck the US and Canadian eastern seaboard. The mighty storm would result in the loss of a ship called the Powhattan, in a story of woe that rivals the most dramatic tragedies of literature.

Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh: A Most Remarkable Man
Very little deterred Arthur MacMurrough Kavanaugh, who, often on horseback, travelled the world, killed tigers, and became what one reporter called “the most remarkable man who has ever occupied a seat in the House of Commons”. Fort Sumter and the "Third System"
The first battle of Fort Sumter is generally considered to represent the first shots of the US Civil War. The fort at the center of the attack was a modern, but unfinished fortification, that itself represented the unique nation that had gone to war with itself.

Janet Guthrie was the first woman to qualify and compete in both the Indianapolis and the Daytona 500, among many other racing firsts. But her goal wasn’t so much to be the first to do something, but, rather, to be the best.

A Rooftop Murder: Stanford White, Henry Thaw, and the Trial of the Century
On June 25th, 1906, many New York City socialites were attending the theatrical premier of “Mam’zelle Champagne” at Madison Square Garden. One member of the audience was Stanford White, a prolific and famous architect. During the show’s final number White was approached by Henry Thaw, a multi-millionaire and son of a coal and railroad baron. The events that happened next would dominate national headlines and shock the public.

It was the spring of 1974 and residents of the Alaska panhandle town of Siska woke to a surprise. 3400 foot mount Edgecombe, towering over the city, was belching thick, black smoke. Little did the worried residents know that local resident Porky Bickar was following in an ancient tradition.

The "Great Olive Poisoning" of 1919
On Saturday, August 23rd, 1919 the Lakeside club of Canton Ohio held a dinner and dance to celebrate the return of Colonel Charles C Weybrecht, formerly adjutant general of the state of ohio and most recently commander of the US 146th infantry regiment, just returned from the war in France. The party, some version of which was happening all over the country as the approximately 2.8 million US service members who served abroad during the great war returned home, was generally agreed to have been a success. The first death came three days later. The “great olive poisoning” of 1919 was one of the most deadly food poisoning outbreaks in US history.

Vitus Bering and the European Discovery of Alaska
It wasn’t until the 18th century that Russia decided to explore their Pacific coast, sending an explorer to map the furthest reaches of their dominion, and determine whether or not Asia and the Americas were connected. That Danish explorer’s name was very nearly lost to history, and while you might recognize his name today, you probably have never heard his story.
