War and Mosquitos
Mosquitos spread malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, West Nile virus, zika virus and numerous other deadly and debilitating diseases. As there are an estimated over 100 trillion mosquitoes on the planet at any given moment, it should not come as a surprise the mosquitos have had a significant impact on war. The History Guy remembers a tiny insect and the outsized impact it had on history.

Malbork Castle and the Teutonic Order.
In modern Poland and Germany, the Teutonic order of knights fought to colonize and Christianize the “Old Prussians” and other groups living along the coast of the Baltic Sea. One of the ways they secured their power was to build fortresses as bases that could keep the local population submissive, and one of the most impressive fortresses they built was Malbork Castle, located at modern Malbork, Poland, not far from Gdansk. It is considered the largest castle in the world measured by land area, and was an important center of the region for hundreds of years.

Guns of USS Texas
Probably the most visible part of what makes a battleship a battleship are her guns - both the enormous main batteries and the dozens of smaller guns that dot the deck and superstructure. And the guns of USS Texas, fired at D-Day, at Iwo Jima, even at Wake Island - have their stories to tell.

A History of Microfilm
The use of microforms, where images and documents are reduced in size, can greatly reduce the amount of space necessary to store documents. But the history of this kind of microphotography has touched considerably more than just document storage.

1862 Explosion at the Allegheny Arsenal
On the same day of the battle of Antietam, 78 residents of the Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania area, died in the worst civilian disaster of the U.S. Civil War- most of them women, some of them just children. But the disaster was nearly forgotten in the shadow of the battle, and the demands of war. The History Guy remembers the 1862 Explosion at the Allegheny Arsenal.

The Great Miami Hurricane of 1926
Miami was the fastest growing city in the nation, in the midst of a great real estate boom. Then nature intervened. At the time, the United States Weather service described the hurricane of September 17 - 20, 1926 as “probably the most destructive storm in the history of the United States” The “Great Miami Hurricane” deserves to be remembered.

1842 Retreat From Kabul
On January 13, 1842, a single man on horseback approached the British garrison at Jalalabad, where soldiers were waiting for a retreating army of several thousand. Exhausted, the man had part of his skull shaved off by a sword and his horse was so exhausted that it would soon perish. As he was brought into the walls of the city the lone man was asked where the rest of the army was. “I am the army,” he replied. Thus ended a disastrous retreat from Kabul, where a British force of some 4,500 soldiers and thousands of civilians was almost entirely destroyed.

Soyuz 11: Death in Space
On June 30th, 1971, three soviet cosmonauts were returning from what was, at the time, the longest period any humans had spent in space. Their re-entry appeared to be normal, and the Soyuz capsule landed safely in Kazakhstan, not far from the Soviet spaceport at Baikonur. Outwardly, the capsule appeared undamaged, but there was no response when Soviet workers knocked on the exterior. When they got the capsule opened, they were shocked to find all three of the cosmonauts dead.

Fitz John's Folly: An Accident of the Most Thrilling Nature
One April morning, in 1862, Brigadier General Fitz-John Porter, commander of the first division of the III corps of the Union Army of the Potomac, arose early, intent on reconnoitering the confederate lines near Yorktown, Virginia. The day would not go quite as planned.

Surprise 1916 U-boat Visit to Rhode Island
Though Germany had restricted it’s submarine warfare, throughout 1916 several events would prove just how dangerous U-boats could be. On October 7th, a surprise visitor to Newport, Rhode Island, would underline just how serious the threat was.

The Reno Gang: The Most Daring Band of Train Robbers
Some of the most famous outlaws of the wild west: The James- Younger gang, Billy the kid, and Sam Bass, were inspired by a brazen gang of Indiana brothers whose names are far less well known, and whose extraordinary career in crime was punctuated by a daring act of larceny that occurred 155 years ago today, on October 6, 1866- the first peacetime train robbery in America. The rise, and rather precipitous fall, of the Indiana Reno gang deserves to be remembered.

Peshtigo: America's Deadliest Fire
The news of the Great Chicago Fire overshadowed the news of another fire in a little town in Wisconsin called Peshtigo, just 250 miles away, that occurred on the exact same day, October 8th 1871.
One of The History Guy's first episodes was on the Peshtigo Fire of 1871. This updated episode on the 150th anniversary of the fire corrects THGs pronunciation of "Peshtigo," and adds more details from period newspapers.

Popham: the Forgotten Colony
There were a number of settlements that attempted to become the first successful colony on the Eastern Seaboard of North America, and that failed quickly in the face of myriad challenges. One of those colonies, established shortly after the considerably more famous one at Jamestown, was established hundreds of miles north, on the rocky, irregular coast of Maine, and called Popham.

Jan Potocki: Werewolf of the Enlightenment
When the first European translation of Arabian Nights appeared in the Eighteenth century, it inspired others - including one truly remarkable Polish nobleman who wrote one of the strangest novels in history. The man who wrote it was nearly as odd, a polyglot and adventurer named Jan Potocki, who at the end of his life might have believed himself to be transforming into a werewolf.

Love in the Civil War: George Custer and the Confederate Wedding
In August, 1862, Captain George Custer attended the wedding of West Point classmate, and Confederate officer, John Lea. One thing often overlooked in a discussion of war is how it affects the strongest of human emotions- love. Maybe it is the time of great loss that makes us recognize what is most precious.

The Execution of Captain George Kendall
Surprisingly little is known about George Kendall- the first Englishman to be convicted by a jury and sentenced to death in Anglo-Saxon America. But the circumstances of his execution serve to illustrate not just the politics of the first settlement of the Virginia Colony, but of its wider role in the convoluted world of intrigue in the courts of mother Europe over control of the New World.

Draining the Swamp: The Little River Drainage District
In southeastern Missouri there is an area of around 1700 square miles that, owing to its shape in relation to the rest of the state, is called the Missouri Bootheel. A little known part of Bootheel history is a project that has been described as one of the greatest engineering projects in American history, at one time the world’s largest drainage project, which moved more dirt than the digging of the Panama canal.

A Ghoul, a Ghost and a Grisly Murder: The Legend of Dr. Joseph McDowell
In Antebellum St Louis, Dr. Joseph Nash McDowell was, to put it mildly, an eccentric, whose legendary reputation included body snatching, artillery, demagoguery, ghosts, a live bear, and murder most foul. He is said to have inspired a character in one of America’s most famous works of fiction.

Operation Outward
Though relatively famous, the Japanese Fu-Go balloon bombs did little damage. But there was another balloon operation, similar in concept, that proved much more effective, and yet is considerably less well known. On the other side of the world it was the British who turned to balloons to wreak havoc on their continental foes.

Cruisers vs Zeppelin: HMAS Sydney and HMS Dublin vs L 43, 1917
On May 4, 1917, one of the strangest air and sea battles in history took place in the North Sea in a fight so desperate that both sides literally fired until they ran out of ammunition.

Desperate Battle: USS Borie vs U-405
By October 1943, the tide in the Battle of the Atlantic had turned, and the allies had shifted from fighting on the defensive to taking the battle to the U-boats themselves. But fishing for U-boats in millions of miles of ocean was a daunting task, and a dangerous one, as the officers and men of the destroyer USS Borie and the German submarine U-405 discovered when they engaged in what the website historynet described as "one of the most audacious and desperate sea battles ever."

Omar Ibn Said: Futa Toro Scholar
For many descendants of slaves, the history of what came before was forgotten - the names of their ancestors, of their homes, and of their cultures. Relatively few were able to leave memories of their lives and stories of what came before them, and even fewer were able to leave their stories in writing, in their own words. But one man from a forgotten African land who was brought to the United States enslaved did what he could, writing a number of treatises in Arabic on theology and history - and most famously, an autobiography.
