The Aero Spacelines Pregnant Guppy
As the US honed in on what it hoped would be its notable fist in manned space exploration, a problem arose that required a unique solution. Surprisingly, the answer to this problem of cutting edge technology turned out to be an obsolete piece of equipment that came as the result of the vision of a daring private entrepreneur, with the help of a few two-by-fours.

The naval war in the Atlantic, fought mostly by German submarines against allied merchant ships, forced the allies to find new ways to defend their vital supply lines. One of the solutions was the creation of an entirely new kind of ship, which hid heavy armament behind the appearance of a helpless merchant ship.

Harald Hardrada: King of Norway
The year 1066 has become indelibly linked to William the Conqueror, the Norman King who by his victory at Hastings seized the English throne. But for every event that becomes gilded in history as a turning point, there were thousands of others overshadowed, and one such event happened only weeks before that fateful battle and involved the same English King, but instead of securing everlasting glory, it ended the career of a Viking king.

1884 Cincinnati Courthouse Riot
On March 26th, 1884, the city of Cincinnati, Ohio was on edge, waiting for a jury to convict a defendant who was accused of murdering a man in December of the year before. That verdict did come down guilty, but not for murder. Instead, the man was convicted of manslaughter. That wasn’t good enough for the people of Cincinnati, and over the next few days one of the most destructive riots in American history rocked the city.

The 1788 Great Fire of New Orleans
French Quarter dot com, notes: “ Looking at the vibrant, festive Quarter with millions of visitors annually, it is hard to imagine the devastation of Holy Saturday morning in 1788. Smoking ruins stretched from Chartres to Dauphine Street, and from Conti to St. Philip.” The 1788 great fire of New Orleans deserves to be remembered.

Ghosts of America's Past: Buildings of the Kirkbride Plan
St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington D.C., once called the Government Hospital for the insane, is representative of more than seventy such campuses made up of massive, ornate Victorian buildings designed by some of the most notable architects in the nation, and built across America over a sixty-five year period. Their now largely decaying forms represent ghosts of an era, built on a vision that became for some, a nightmare. The buildings of the Kirkbride Plan deserve to be remembered.

1944 Bombing of Miles City, Montana
It was one of those dramatic events in time of war. Civilians, threatened by an invasion by a remorseless and intractable enemy, desperately calling for military bombers to attack that enemy as it surged towards the defenseless town. In a raging storm a brave crew volunteers for the dangerous mission, with the fate of the city in their hands. Such brave acts were often required during the violence of the Second World War. Just not usually in Montana.

The Great Blizzard of 1888
The winter of 1888 had been exceptionally mild — until a blizzard struck suddenly, changing the face of New York City and most of the eastern coast of the United States forever. It was the deadliest winter storm in U.S. history. They called it, "The Great White Hurricane."

Frederick Fröbel and the Concept of Kindergarten
Just three centuries ago in Europe, the idea of 4 and 5-year-olds attending school with a system of learning would have been preposterous. Kindergarten is a relatively new concept and its creator among the most influential educational reformers of the 19th century. It is history that deserves to be remembered.

The Real Count of Monte Cristo: Thomas Alexandre Dumas
Alexandre Dumas wrote some of the most widely-read books of all time, among them “The Three Musketeers” and the “Count of Monte Christo.” Lesser known is that some of his most famous characters were inspired by his father, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas. The History Guy recalls the forgotten story of the man who inspired some of literature's greatest adventure heroes.

Ireland in the Second World War
When the United Kingdom declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939, Ireland, despite being still technically a dominion of the United Kingdom, elected to stay out of the war, choosing instead to remain neutral, the only member of the British Commonwealth to do so. Neutrality offered both advantages and challenges, and the choice is still controversial today. The History Guy recalls the unique position of Ireland during the Second World War.

Evacuation Day: A forgotten American Holiday
November 25 was celebrated as a holiday in America for more than a century, and not because of Thanksgiving. In1783, the United States had much to celebrate, and owed a unique debt to a young sergeant, a largely forgotten hero named John Van Arsdale. The History Guy recalls a forgotten American holiday.

The Edelweiss Pirates and WWII
Long before the start of World War II, there was a significant amount of resistance to the Nazi regime in Germany among the nation's youth, including the colorfully named Edelweiss Pirates. It is history that deserves to be remembered.

Alfred Lord Tennyson and the Charge of the Light Brigade
On December 9, 1854, Alfred Tennyson, Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, first published his poem about the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. The poem would become his most famous, and came to represent the challenges of the age, and the life of the poet who became its voice.
