The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and Forgotten History
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire has been the subject of many books and documentaries, and its story much too large for an episode of the history guy. But recent discoveries have illustrated also the fragile nature of history, as much of the record of one of the most famous events in American history almost became forgotten history.

In early May of 1902, a man named Louis-Auguste Ciparis was jailed in the city of St Pierre, Martinique. He was put into solitary confinement, locked in a small cell, a bomb proof magazine built partially underground. His sorry situation turned out, however, to be one of the greatest strokes of luck for a single man in history, because in the following days he became one of only a handful of survivors of the deadliest volcanic eruption in the 20th century.

Syracuse Salt Potatoes
Food is an integral part of history, defining culture and sometimes playing a large role in the prosperity of certain regions, cities, or entire countries. Much of that history is taken for granted, and unique cuisine remains only locally known or its history is forgotten. But many dishes have connections to wider histories that illuminate the past and connect us to the people that came before us. Such is the history of the salt potatoes of Syracuse, New York.
Every community has stories worth telling. Commemorate your local history with a roadside marker funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation®. Then THG hops across the pond to the Caribbean, and tells the story of the Pirate Capital, Port Royal, and the earthquake that ended an age. Finally, The History Guy tells the story of an English ship bringing silkworms and a doctor to the colony at Jamestown, only to be struck by pirates.

The Soviet's German Scientists: Osoaviakhim
In 1945 the United States initiated Project paperclip, a secret program in which more than 1,600 Nazi German scientists, engineers, and technicians were taken from Nazi Germany into the employment of the United States government. And, of course, the Soviets were not going to be left behind. But their project, Osoaviakhim, was very different from paperclip.

Museums: A History
It seems, as archaeologist Dr. Peter Leeming says, that “Discovery and collection is as old as us and our hominid relations”. How this interest in the unusual has evolved into the modern system of museums and enormous historical, natural, and other collections is history that deserves to be remembered.

Today the history guy tells two stories of state borders in the US. The first is the long history of Missouri’s borders, which were deeply entwined with American politics of the period. Then the history guy will tell you about the time that Ohio and Michigan went to war over the border between them - and how despite not participating, Wisconsin lost the most.

1947 Texas City Disaster
Around 8:30 AM on April 16, 1947, a large column of smoke started billowing from a ship at the port in Texas City, Texas. Forty minutes later, the ship exploded. In the hours that followed, the scale of the disaster became clear - what is generally considered to be the worst industrial disaster in American history.

Lafayette Pool: Texas Tanker
In the brutal fighting during the summer of 1944 the US Third Armored Division often led the way, earning the nickname “the spearhead division.” And through much of the fighting, staff sergeant Lafayette Pool and the crew of the M4 medium tank “In the mood” were at the tip of that spear.

The brutal fighting during the Second World War on the Italian peninsula would fade in popular memory against the dramatic fighting in France after D-Day. However the Italian front remained an important part of the greater strategy, and had its share of heroes. One of those heroes was Alton “Knappie” Knappenberger, an infantryman in the 3rd Infantry Division, who in his brief service performed acts of incredible heroism

This episode was posted a week before June 6th, 2022 which marked the 78th anniversary of the D-Day landings. In honor of the enormous sacrifice by the many men and women who fought, planned, and supported that battle, today the history guy tells three lesser-known tales of heroism and sacrifice, just a few of the many meaningful stories of those first days in the battle to crack fortress Europe. First, the history guy tells the story of two D-day medics, Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore, who spent those days saving lives. Then the history guy will tell the oft-forgotten story of the Coast Guard’s contribution to the massive invasion. Finally, the History Guy will talk about the US Rangers and the 116th Infantry Regiment.

The NACA: The Most Important Government Agency You Never Heard Of.
I suspect that not one in a thousand Americans is familiar with the work of the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics, and that is truly a tragedy, because the committee had an outsized effect that played a critical role in winning the Second World War, and shepherding the US into the Jet Age.

A Cure for the Plague
The bubonic plague is a well-known illness from the medieval era. But the common conception seems to be that it is a disease of history, that died out a long time ago and has no impact on today’s world. But is that really the case? The history of attempts to eradicate the black plague provides a lesson for the present that deserve to be remembered.

Trek of the US 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps
On June 20, 1897, The Salt Lake Tribune opined: “Not many years ago the bicycle was looked upon as a mere toy, a kind of dandy-horse, and the riders were regarded as fit subjects for pity. That time, however, is a thing of the past.” The paper was not just talking about the growing trend of bicycle clubs forming throughout the nation, but about a specific, and rather extraordinary, bicycle trip.
