John Singer Sargent was somewhat of a rarity, having achieved recognition and success as an artist during his lifetime. He was controversial as an artist- known for realism in a period when experimental forms like impressionism and cubism were in vogue. He was an intriguing person, intensely private, and almost a man without country. But his prodigious body of work is, above all, a stunning record of the time in which he lived.

Today, the History Guy tells the stories of two little-remembered battles of the civil war, fought west of the Mississippi. The first is one of the earliest battles in the war, where forces met to decide control of the key state of Missouri in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. Later in the war, a Confederate general put together a rag-tag army to threaten the Missouri again, and met a union force at the battle of Prairie Grove.

Sinking of the Vasa
Brightly colored and trumpeting the prestige of King Gustav II, with 64 guns the Vasa was the most powerful ship in the world. As the ship’s sails caught wind, it teetered hard to port, and suddenly the shouts of the sailors on board turned to screams. In front of hundreds of spectators and agents of other European nations, Sweden’s greatest ship sank after sailing only 1400 yards.

The Presidents' Mammoth Cheeses
In 1836, President Andrew Jackson received a surprising gift in the form of an enormous wheel of cheese. Of course a huge presidential cheese might occasion comment in and of itself, but perhaps even more surprisingly, it wasn’t even the first ridiculously large wheel of cheese delivered to an American president.

Oskar Speck's Amazing Voyage
Life was difficult in Germany in the time of the Weimar republic, between the first and second world wars. An adventurous spirit, 25 year old Oskar Speck decided that the best course of action was to escape Germany’s economic woes by Kayak, sending him on an epic journey whose history was nearly lost in the face of the dramatic events of the period.

You’ve likely heard of Samuel F.B Morse, generally credited with the invention of the telegraph. But you might be less aware that the man who famously used his code to say “what hath God wrought?” was also an artist, in fact one of America’s best and most prolific portrait artists, one of our most gifted historical artists, and a leading figure in the development of an American school of art.

The 1859 Carrington Event

On September 3, 1859 the Memphis Tennessee Daily Appeal noted a most startling event. “On Thursday night last, about 12 o clock, the heavens were suddenly lit up as with a half dozen moons.” The glow was so remarkable that people assumed it must be coming from a massive fire, and the paper reported that city fire bells were rung. But, the paper writes “When the truth revealed itself, it appeared that old nature had only lit up its own chandelier.” The lights were the aurora borealis, although you can hardly fault people from the American South for not recognizing the northern lights. And while the people of Memphis might have been overawed at the “Nature’s chandelier,” the article gives no indication that they truly knew how extraordinary the event was, nor its connection to the glowing ball of gas called the sun.

The Surprising History of the Mullet
A July, 2022 edition of the newspaper The Mirror notes: “Mullet 'Back in Fashion' as 80s Haircut Soars in Popularity Among Men and Women.” That grim news has understandably left many of us recoiling in shock and wonder just how the human race could have forgotten the failures of its past, only to repeat them in the present.

James II and the Siege of Roxburgh
James II of Scotland had reason to be optimistic in 1460 - he was besieging one of the last holdouts of English control in Scotland, and he had consolidated support for his own rule. For his siege, he had some of the most modern and powerful weapons then known: Bombards.

November 11, 1943: Floyd Lindstrom
It always seems ironic to tell a story of war that occurred on November 11. November 11 was to have represented the end of the war to end all wars. But, of course, war did not end. On November 11, 1943, Allied forces were fighting a desperate, if nearly forgotten, battle with German troops in the mountains of Italy.

Colt Firearms
Last year my son Josh and I got a very special invitation to go meet a group of hobbyists dedicated to preserving a bit of history. I truly appreciate people whose passion for collecting intersects with my love of history. That is why we were so excited to attend the Colt Collectors association’s 42nd annual all colt gun show held just outside Indianapolis in Noblesville Indiana.

Silliness in Lawmaking: Pantaloon Prohibitions and an Abundance of Anthems
Some laws have not aged well, and others seem an almost bizarre waste of government resources. But, quaint as they are, they illustrate the flow of time, and the weight of history.

Among London's many problems as it grew at the beginning of the nineteenth century was travel between the two banks of the river Thames, which held important ports that could accept shipping coming up the river from the channel. Bridges would interfere with that important trade, so in the years of the 19th century engineers began to examine the only other option: instead of going over, going under the river.

The Ghost Ship of Diamond Shoals
On January 31st, 1921, a Coast Guard surfman sighted a vessel trapped on North Carolina’s infamous Diamond Shoals. Owing to bad weather, a Coast Guard boat was not able to reach the stranded vessel until February 4. When they boarded the ship, the crew was missing. How the “Ghost Ship of Diamond Shoals” came to be stranded, and what happened to her crew, is an enduring mystery.

Bones: A History of Ossuaries
One means of dealing with human remains that seems bizarre today is the ossuary- the disinterment, collection, and often decorative display, of human bones. The macabre practice might seem bizarre to the modern world, but it is surprisingly common throughout history, occurring on multiple continents and in multiple cultures from prehistory to surprisingly modern times.

On this episode, The History Guy tells two stories of railway disasters. In the years before highways and jets, rail was the fastest form of transportation, and with so many trains running, some of those trips were bound to end in disaster. First is the story of Quintinshill, where a series of unfortunate events led to the deadliest train accident in British history. Then the History Guy talks about circus trains, and a terrible accident: the deadliest circus train wreck in American history.
