Controversial Candies
Circus Peanuts, Black Licorice, and Candy Corn are possibly the most divisive Halloween treats. Each, however, has its own history that has allowed them to, perhaps surprisingly, have endured to show up in trick-or-treat bags and candy aisles for generations.

On today’s episode, we’re talking about the Eastern front of WWII. First the History Guy talks about one of the first battles of Operation Barbarossa, the heroic soviet defense of Brest Fortress. Then he tells the story of the famous “Night Witches”, the soviet women who terrorized German troops from the air. Finally, the History Guy tells the story of one one of the most important battles of the war - the Battle of Moscow - and of Panfilov’s twenty-eight guardsmen.

The Hurricane and the 1715 Treasure Fleet
It is difficult to pin down a number, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association estimates that between one third and one half million people died in Atlantic hurricanes between 1492 and 1994. More than a thousand of those lives were lost on July 31st, 1715, in a tragedy more remembered for treasure than people.

Corsairs of the Spanish Main
Europe was almost constantly at war during the sixteenth century in what have come to be called the “wars of religion.” And in the far off waters of the New World, European rivals intended to do as much damage to, and claim as much treasure from, Spanish colonies and ships as possible. But, Instead of fighting a traditional war, France and England both provided private ships with Letters of Marque, also called Letters of Course, to battle the Spanish in an undeclared war across the Atlantic. Among the earliest of these quasi-official pirates were known by the swashbuckling name of Corsairs, and were intimately tied to the European wars of religion.

USS Texas and the Battle of Okinawa
By March 21st, 1945, the Battleship USS Texas had seen combat across the world. She had been present at the Allied invasion of North Africa, the landings at Normandy, and the invasion of southern France in Operation Dragoon and the landings at Iwo Jima. Despite that long service, she wasn’t done yet, and still faced one of the most dangerous operations of the war: the assault on Okinawa.

Death of a Queen: Elizabeth I
The death of Queen Elizabeth left the people of her realm in shock. She had ruled for so long that few could even remember another monarch’s time. Her death was unexpected, as she had been in robust health, which had only recently declined. She had ruled over a golden age for her people, and was beloved, her loss affecting them greatly. But, what was even more concerning, her death meant danger to the realm, because, unlike the Death of her cousin and namesake some 419 years later, Queen Elizabeth the First had no direct heir, and had resisted naming one.

Awareness Daze: Unofficial Holidays
Unless ye be residin under a barnacle covered rock, ye should know that today, the nineteenth of September, be global Talk Like a Pirate Day. Aaarrrrr!!!!!!! In fact, pretty much every day represents several of these unofficial holidays. Yesterday was National Cheeseburger Day, tomorrow is National Miniature Golf Day. But where did all these days begin? The underlying idea would be well recognized in ancient Rome. And each of these celebrations has a history all its own.

1687 Destruction of the Parthenon
The Athenian Parthenon is perhaps the most recognized of the ruins of the ancient world. But how, exactly, did the great temple become a ruin? Was it an ancient battle? A disaster of antiquity? Well, neither. It might surprise you to find out that the building itself remained largely intact into the early modern era.

Old Glory
On September 14th, 1814, Francis Scott Key was awake in the early morning when the sun began rising, revealing clearly the still-flying American flag above Fort McHenry. It was that morning that he began writing the poem that is now so well-known throughout the United States, “The Star Spangled Banner”. The story of the Flag of the United States of America is history that deserves to be remembered.

To Choose a Queen
Royal succession is not always easy, and more than once in history seemed to turn on a matter of random chance. 115 years before Queen Elizabeth II, the only daughter of the King’s fourth son, who was never himself a king, became Queen.

Caesar Salad and Satan's Playground
The rare example of a food fad that has maintained its popularity, the tangy dressing on romaine lettuce salad has a history as rich as a coddled egg, involving multiple nations, a bevy of movie stars, an infamous American divorcee, a disputed origin story, and, prominently, alcohol. And, perhaps surprising to many, is unrelated to the notorious Roman dictator.
