Lewis and Clark were not the first Europeans to cross the continent and reach the Pacific. Instead, a Scottish-born explorer is credited with the first east-west journey across America north of Mexico. Though more obscure, the adventures and journey of Sir Alexander Mackenzie deserve to be remembered.

Salisbury Steak: The First Fad Diet
It has been estimated that as much as two-thirds of deceased soldiers in the US Civile War were killed not by bullets but by disease, with the most prevalent of those diseases being the intestinal illnesses diarrhea and dysentery. It was not clear, based on the established medical knowledge, exactly what caused these illnesses to flourish in military camps, but one physician by the name of James H. Salisbury suspected diet was the greatest culprit, and came up with his own solution.

On today’s episode, The History Guy talks about two impressive Kates of the 19th century. First is Kate Warne, who became America’s first female detective when she was hired by Alan Pinkerton in 1856 - and she may have saved Abraham Lincoln’s life. Then the history Guy talks about one of the women behind one of the most famous gunslingers of the west: “Big Nose” Kate, common-law wife of Doc Holliday.

Just Judges: An Unsolved Mystery
"The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" is a work that has been so adored that it has become infamous as the most stolen artwork in history. Of all the many times the piece was stolen, however, there is one incident that stands above the rest as probably the most significant theft, because it is the only time that part of the painting went missing, never to be seen again. It is an enduring historical whodunit that deserves to be remembered.

Following the powerful but short lived Qin Dynasty, the Han dynasty is often seen as a Golden Age, with significant scientific advancement and economic prosperity. This included pivotal events which would help establish the Silk road. But as with all things in history, old eras come to an end, and new ones rise. In the second century AD the dynasty faced a series of crises that threatened to end the empire. Control over the southern portion of the empire was decided in a legendary battle nearly forgotten here in the West: The Battle of Red Cliffs.

Ham Radio and Operation Deep Freeze
The eleven nations included in the Antarctic portion of the 1957-1958 International Geophysical Year created several permanent research stations, including the first permanent station at the South Pole. The effort to create a permanent scientific presence at, literally, the end of the earth required enormous effort of scientists and military personnel. Aided, uniquely, by a couple of teenagers from New Jersey.

San Diego's Hurricane Giraffes
In 1938, the merchant steamer SS Robin Goodfellow was caught in the Great New England Hurricane. On board the ship were some unique passengers: two Giraffes. Those Giraffes, caught in a storm that killed hundreds of people, were en route to San Diego, California, and the storm was only the beginning of their cross-country journey.

On October 16th, 1890, New Orleans Police Chief David Hennessy was shot to death while walking home. His death would spur violence and mass arrests, and suspicion against Italian-American immigrants who seemed to be a part of a sinister criminal conspiracy known as the mafia. His murder would result in a notorious trial, followed by an infamous event of mob justice.

On July 20, 1969, at 10:56 PM, eastern time, television images of Neil Armstrong were broadcast world wide as he put his foot on the lunar surface. But there is far more to the program that represented mankind's first extra-terrestrial steps than that first one. And one mission is perhaps more forgotten than others, because of the coincidence of history.

The Indiana Central Canal

Though nearly forgotten now as they have become largely obsolete in the face of rail and road, canals were for a time the end-all be-all of transportation technology, and the building of a canal could guarantee prosperity for the towns it traveled through. Hoping to get in on the game, the state of Indiana planned the Central Indiana canal, meant to connect the Ohio river to the already existing canal network And then everything went wrong.

Continents: A History

If you’re from the United States, it’s likely you were taught that there are seven continents on the Earth. In some other parts of the world, however, there is a six continent model, alternatively combining Europe and Asia into Eurasia, or North and South America into the single continent “America." Putting aside geological definitions, the term ‘continent’ has an ancient history, and its definitions have impacted global politics, science, and education for centuries, and its modern understanding did not fully coalesce until very recently.

On today’s episode, we chat about two heroes of the American civil war who fought against frightful odds to secure better lives for themselves and their people. First is the incredible story of Robert Smalls, who at 22 years old decided on an audacious plan to escape slavery and escape to the Union. Then The History Guy will talk about Abraham Galloway, who escaped slavery only to return to the south to act as a union spy.

Last War Patrol of HMS Terrapin

On her seventh war patrol, in the south Java Sea, the T class British submarine HMS Terrapin and her crew had faced the terror of battle and barely survived. Badly damaged and far from home, sometimes the drama of war is not just in the battle, but in the voyage home.

Juan Sebastián de Elcano
One of the items that has spent the most time on The History Guy set is a wooden ship model of the Juan Sebastian de Elcano. The tall masted barquentine and the explorer after whom it was named deserve to be remembered.

Werner Forssmann, the Doctor That Touched His Own Heart
More than one doctor has found their theories dismissed by the existing establishment, only to be proven right years later. Perhaps none of those stories are more dramatic than the story of Werner Forssmann, who, when faced with defeat, simply chose to go around everyone and do his experiment anyway - on himself.
