Andy Granatelli: Motorsport Legend
Andy Granatelli was involved with cars from a young age, the race that would receive most of his interest was the so-called “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”: the Indianapolis 500. On the way he would make a name for himself both on and off the track, showing a flair for the dramatic, the determined, and the ingenuitive. All of this was more impressive because he started with almost nothing.

Pineapple: the King of Fruits
Pineapples are so culturally significant that pineapples adorn the tops of cathedrals, and serve as the domicile of one of the world’s most popular cartoon characters. An estimated 300 billion pineapples are farmed each year, and a 2021 YouGov poll lists pineapples as the sixth most favorite fruit, ahead of all varieties of apples and oranges.

The White Ship

Dynamite Luke Dillon and the Welland Canal
Around 7 in the evening on April 21, 1900 two large explosions rocked the hamlet of Thorold, Ontario. It was an act of terrorism, an attempt to breach the locks of the Welland canal- a ship canal connecting Lake Ontario to Lake Erie, allowing ships to bypass Niagara Falls. Three men were arrested, but who were these dynamitards? It would be two years before the identity of their notorious leader would be revealed.

1945 Naval Bombardment of Japan
At the end of July, 1945 the war in the pacific was almost over, but the allies didn’t know that yet. In preparation for an invasion of Japan, allied navies engaged, for the first time, in major naval bombardment operations against the home islands. Over the course of a month, eight battleships, a dozen cruisers, and numerous destroyers bombarded military and industrial targets in one of the last major operations of the Second World War.

Of the millions of men and women who served across the world during WWII, there are countless stories of people who went above and beyond in the face of great danger to serve their country, to save their comrades, and to bring an end to one of the most horrifying conflicts in human history. One of those men was Richard Ira Bong, a fighter pilot who served in the Pacific and was so successful at what he did that he became America’s “Ace of Aces” - the top flying ace of the US Army Air Force.

A Tale of Two Dakotas
Of all the obscure flyover states, perhaps none are more confusing to those who fly over than the place where I happened to spend my youth- the Dakotas. In fact, many American schoolchildren have pondered the question- Why are there two Dakotas? The answer to that question is a good illustration of the strange politics of the territorial history of the United States,.

The 1900 Hoboken Docks Fire
On June 30, 1900 what was described as “a slight blaze in a bale of cotton” quickly spread into a disaster that newspapers branded the “Hoboken Horror.” The great Hoboken Docks Fire killed hundreds, destroyed millions of dollars in property, and demonstrated risks of the era of great ocean liners.

The Battle of Vouillé and the Map of Europe
More than 1500 years ago, in a field in central France, two armies clashed. At the head of each was an ambitious and powerful king, who planned to press their power, prestige and influence further than ever before. The battle they fought at Vouille in 507 A.D. had an enormous impact on the history of Europe, and was pivotal in drawing the borders of nations that appear so familiar on modern maps.

History and QWERTY
On June 23, 1868 a patent was granted by the US patent office to C Latham Sholes, Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soule of Milwaukee. While you would likely be familiar with its modern counterpart, the device itself sees very little use today. And yet, that patent changed the world in so many ways, and likely affects almost all of you on a daily basis.

Scuttling of the High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow
102 years ago today fifty-two ships of the German Imperial Navy were sunk in a single afternoon, in what has been described by the BBC as “the single greatest loss of warships in history.” The loss occurred more than six months after the general cease fire called the Armistice of Eleven November, and just a week before the final peace treaty ending the war.

Often overlooked, Operation Dragoon played an important role in the liberation of France, and was supported in part by the guns of the USS Texas, which had just supported the Normandy landings two months prior, and which would face unique challenges in what has been called France’s second D-Day.

1882 Dubuque Frog Hail
Severe weather comes in many forms, and affects humans and the environment in many ways,. But some types of severe weather are simply so odd, such bizarre examples of the complexity of nature, that they deserve to be remembered. Like that time, in Dubuque Iowa, when hail included live frogs.

The Darien Venture: Scottish Panama

Steps: A History of Treadmills
The Sports and Fitness Industry estimated that 53 million people use a treadmill at least once a year. While today’s treadmills are primarily used as an exercise device, their history stretches back further than you might think, and for thousands of years had nothing to do with exercise.

USS Texas and Omaha Beach
On June 6, 1944, the allies prepared one of the most ambitious operations in military history: the landing of over 156,000 troops in Nazi-occupied France. D-Day remains the largest seaborne invasion in history. In addition to the troops that landed, over 190,000 naval personnel and more than 6,900 ships were involved in the landing. Among them was the USS Texas. Commissioned in 1914, the Texas was one of seven battleships that took part in the landings, and played a key role providing fire support in the difficult landings at Omaha Beach.

Pueblo Colorado: The Great Flood of 1921
The unique topography of what is called the “eastern foothills" of Colorado gives rise to a weather phenomenon called “cloudbursts." A flood resulting from a cloudburst rises so quickly that it is usually described as a 'wall of water.' 100 years ago today the “great flood” of 1921 came during the transition of the American west from the wild frontier to the modern world, reminding us that both are subject to the awesome power of nature.

Charge of the 26th Cavalry
It may sound surprising that the last American cavalry charge occurred less than a hundred years ago, not in the pre-industrial years of the nineteenth century, but on the modern, tank-filled battlefields of WWII.

In 1964 engineers at NASAs jet propulsion laboratory noted that a rare alignment of four planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, would occur in the late 1970s, allowing an unprecedented opportunity to have a single spacecraft visit several planets. NASA began supporting a project to send spacecraft to take advantage of this alignment, calling the idea “The Grand Tour.” That program would eventually become the Voyager program- two extraordinary spacecraft that gave we earthlings a better view of the outer planets of our solar system than ever before, and offered our first true glimpse of what is beyond that system.

The Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay
On the Maryland side of the Potomac river in Charles County, Maryland, there is a shallow bay tucked between Sandy and Liverpool point. Partially hidden in the muck and largely submerged, this unassuming bay holds a unique secret: the “largest shipwreck fleet in the Western Hemisphere”.
