A string of tornadoes tore through multiple states overnight including a rare quad state tornado that struck Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee. At least 1 was killed when a tornado demolished a nursing home and at least 12 people in Kentucky may have died inside a candle factory. NBC’s Morgan Chesky reports for Weekend TODAY.

As more research is done into the newly discovered Omicron COVID-19 variant, some evidence is emerging to suggest that it might not present the same way as other strains of the disease.

New data from a small study in South Africa suggests Pfizer’s vaccine is less effective against the omicron variant. However, the research did show that those who were infected and vaccinated fared much better, suggesting boosters may provide added protection.

Delta variant ravages the southern U.S. as officials push for COVID-19 booster shots

In the last week, the Taliban took over Jalalabad, Kandahar, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and 15 Afghan provincial capitals. Taliban advanced at a breakneck speed to capture entire Afghanistan even before the last of the US troops could exit the country. After the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the group was believed to be weakened, but the Taliban’s rapid gains show that the group was never weakened but only laid dormant, waiting for the US to exit. As Taliban took control over Afghanistan, millions of Afghans evacuated from the country. Hundreds of US embassy personnel also relocated to airport facility.

On the first morning under the Taliban rule, hundreds of civilians tried to escape Kabul city flooding the international airport. The Taliban patrolled the streets of Kabul trying to project calm. The national flag of Afghanistan was seen lower in the capital city.

Three persons allegedly held on to a wheel of a US plane flying out of Kabul and are seen falling to their death in one of the multiple videos showing insane attempts by Afghans to escape Taliban rule. A video of stowaways looking like dots dropping from the plane was shared by many, including Tariq Majidi of TOLO News, who wrote: "Three Kabul residents who were trying to leave the country by hiding next to the tire or wing of an American plane, fell on the rooftop of local people.
