Types Of Lock Functions | Lever Functions | GSL Discussion
Today, Uriah goes over several types of lock functions available on levers. Lever functions are another critical piece of knowledge to understand bot when training to be a locksmith or installing security hardware on your property.
There are several different types of lever functions, including combinations of keyed locks, plungers, or flat handles with no locking function. The purpose of this discussion is to help illustrate how they function differently from one another, as the industry names for these lock and lever functions aren't always very clear.

Rekeying A 1999 Honda Accord Ignition Cylinder
At Guardian Safe & Lock, we had a customer bring in a 1999 Honda Accord Ignition cylinder that was experiencing issues. His key was no longer properly working the cylinder after years of use. So that lead to the question of what to do with his 99 accord ignition?
He did the smart thing and contacted us at Guardian Safe And Lock. Uriah then took the opportunity to show you, our viewers, how to properly rekey a worn and aged 1999 Honda Accord Ignition.
Auto cylinders commonly use wafers instead of pins, meaning that while rekeying them is a similar process to say, a door lock, there are some differences in technique that Uriah clears up today.

How To Tell What Handing A Door Is | Door Handing | GSL Discussion
In today's video, Uriah goes over how to tell what handing a door is. A door's handing is a descriptor used to tell which way the door swings when operated, either right-hand, left-hand, right-hand reverse or left-hand reverse.
The toping of door handing is a crucial concept to understand when installing door hardware either as an amateur or as a locksmith in training in order to ensure that your door swings either outward or inward properly.

Why Is My Door Slamming? | Door Closers | GSL Discussion
Sometimes, a door closes much harder than it needs to, or it closes much too slowly. People ask us all the time "Why is my door slamming?". Today, the owner of Guardian Safe & Lock Uriah Ortiz discusses door closers, including what they are, how they work, and how to adjust them.
Door closers are primarily found in commercial buildings, though some homes may have them installed as well. Door closers are hydraulically-driven mechanisms designed to help a door close. This includes everything from simply ensuring they latch shut to pulling a door closed in high wind conditions.

Brivo Access Control & Eagle Eye Networks Installation | Hotworx Tomball Texas
Today, Uriah goes over our second Hotworx Hot Yoga location put to film, discussing the business concept and what we at Guardian Safe & Lock installed for them in the form of Brivo Access Control and Eagle Eye Networks surveillance cameras.
As we've discussed briefly before, Brivo and Eagle Eye Networks are sister companies, producing access control and security cameras designed to work through the cloud.
These cloud-based security installations can be remotely managed and configured from anywhere an internet connection is available, all without a true DVR or NVR. This is due to the fact that system information and video recordings are saved to a cloud server.

Access Control and Security Camera Installation | Leading From The Front With Uriah | Episode #9
Today, Uriah is again Leading From The Front and assisting locksmith technicians Joshua Gehring and Andrew Turner with an access control and security camera installation for Hotworx yoga in Spring, Texas. Please note that we have obtained the owner of the property's permission to film and discuss their installation.
Today's installation features a Brivo access control system and an Eagle Eye Networks security camera system. Brivo and Eagle eye are partners with Guardian Safe & Lock, providing hardware for us to enable Hotworx's business plan and security.
Cloud-based access control and security camera installations are able to be accessed from anywhere the owner or employee have a steady internet connection. In the case of Hotworx, their new Brivo system will allow customers to come and go for infrared yoga sessions at any time during the day or night while still keeping the building secure and locked for non-members.
Hotworx's Eagle-Eye networks security camera installation will also allow the owner and any staff assigned log-in credentials to remotely view recordings and live-feeds of cameras wired into the building from nearly any internet-capable device.

Need A New Barrel Key? Watch How To Duplicate A Tubular Key
A Tubular key can go by a few different names. Barrel keys, radial keys, circle pin tumbler locks, and the trademarked "Ace lock" all refer to a system in which the pins are aligned to face the operator in a circle instead of sitting vertically in a line over the key.
Copying a tubular key is a notorious task for those outside the industry, with many people believing they can't have copies of the key made when turned away at big-box stores; but again, your local locksmith can save the day.
Uriah goes over the HPC Scotsman tubular key duplicator and how to operate the device to copy a customer's tubular key. This device is fairly standard to the industry, and should be a process repeatable by your local locksmith!

Making A Key For A 2006 Toyota 4runner | Picking The Brain | Episode #1
Today on the first episode of Picking The Brain, Brian Jarboe takes on making a key for a 2006 Toyota 4Runner!
The process is fairly simple for this car. It beings with actually pulling the door lock cylinder from the driver's side door, then reading the code printed on the lock, and running it through software to learn the key cuts.
These key cuts are used for making a metal key blank, which is used to test if they work. If they do, the metal key is duplicated onto a transponder key and programmed with a car key programmer like the SmartBox mini used in this episode!
The 2006 Toyota 4Runner uses a transponder key, which we discuss on our blog here: https://www.guardiansafeandlock.com/blog/what-is-a-transponder-key/
Transponder keys, or "chip keys" tend to be more expensive than old metal blanks. Ever wondered why?: https://www.guardiansafeandlock.com/blog/why-are-chip-keys-so-expensive/

Installing a Security Bar For A Back Door
Today, Uriah Ortiz and Joshua Gehring are installing a security bar for a back door on a commercial storefront property.
A security bar is designed to brace and hold the door from the inside, preventing people from pulling your door open. A security bar for door protection is commonly applied in retail spaces, though other applications are entirely possible.
Installing a security bar on a door is relatively simple. First, measurements are taken and the assembly is bolted through the door. Then hook bolts are placed to an appropriate length and the proper bar is installed. Then, a legal warning sticker to remove the bar during occupancy is applied.

Installing A Single Door Access Control System
Today, Guardian Safe & Lock installed a single door access control system for a commercial customer here in Tomball, Tx. Brandon Gonzalez and Andrew Turner received an extra hand from Uriah Ortiz to complete the installation.
The entire access control system is comprised of an electric door strike as well as a keypad and dedicated power supply in their backroom, all manufactured by Allegion. The process included mounting both the keypad and electric door strike onto a single exterior door, as well as running wire through the ceiling of the building and down the frame to supply power to allow the single door access control system to function.
This access control installation can easily be integrated in the future into a larger access control system, but for now, it ensures that employees have easy access into and out of the building without the hassle of assigning keys to everyone or having those keys become lost over time.

Drilling Into A TL 15 Safe!
TL 15 safes are the type of unit created for places like jewelry stores and pharmacies to operate under strict insurance stipulations. This specific TL safe is a TL 15 rated safe, meaning that it's been rated to survive safecracking by 2 experts in the Underwriters' Laboratories with most common mechanical and electrical tools for at least 15 minutes.
These safes are some of the sturdiest units an individual can buy to secure their property. TL rated safes feature special features to make them more secure, such as a steel ball-bearing hard plate to resist drills and a heavy concrete mix to protect from fire. The TL-15 safe we show in this video is at least 600 lbs!
This is a reuploaded version of this video, with added censoring.

Making An Electronic Safe Manual | Replacing A Keypad With A Dial
Today, Guardian Safe & Lock had a customer purchase a Hollon FB-685E Oyster series safe that presented us with a unique video opportunity: Making an electronic safe manual!
After a standard shift, Uriah got to record the process of removing an electronic keypad lock from a safe and mounting a new mechanical combination dial. Manual dials have many complex and moving parts inside of the lock pack, and a lot of variables must be accounted for to ensure the proper functioning of the safe after swapping over to one.
This safe presented an additional challenge: The original electronic keypad's mounting was not centered, making for a few extra steps necessary to mount the manual dial correctly.

Home Safe Installation | Leading From The Front With Uriah | Episode #8
Today on leading from the front, Uriah and Josh do some Home Safe Installation. In today's video, two types of home safe are featured: The Hollon FB 450-E Fire & Burglary home safe, and the Hollon HG-16E gun safe.
These units are on a different end of the security safe spectrum, the FB-450E is a premium unit that is rated for 2 hours of fire resistance by the Underwriters' Laboratories and has security features such as a glass relocker to help prevent theft. The unit is more box-shaped than gun safe or other home safe models and is primarily meant for documents, electronics, or other smaller property.
The Hollon HG-16E is a starter tier gun safe that we've featured a product review over in the past. This customer wanted us to perform a mechanical safe dial installation to replace the electronic keypad. We originally wanted this to be a separate video, but due to time constraints for the delivery, we had to include the additional footage in this release of leading from the front. Rest assured we will release a more detailed tutorial in the future.

Hollon Gun Safe Delivery And Installation | Leading From The Front With Uriah | Episode #5
In this episode of Leading From The Front With Uriah, the guys get to go out for Hollon gun safe delivery and installation.
Uriah, Brandon, and Andrew got on the road to deliver two Hollon gun safes to two seperate locations. The first gun safe delivery and installation was a Hollon Black Hawk BHS-22E unit which was installed with a light kit at the customer's home and bolted down.
The second gun safe delivery was a Hollon Republic series Gun Safe, the RG-22E. This unit was delivered to the customer's storage unit and left on its' legs instead of going through standard installation and getting bolted down as usual.
If you're interested in the gun safe models discussed in this delivery and installation, we've written a detailed review on our blog of the Hollon Black Hawk series on our website: https://www.guardiansafeandlock.com/blog/hollon-black-hawk-gun-safes/

Locksmiths Rekey Weslock Locks | Leading From The Front With Uriah | Episode #4
Uriah leads from the front again with Andrew Turner, our newest locksmith technician. They head to a customer's home to rekey Weslock locks. One of the locks has an issue with a faulty latch, and a temporary replacement was installed until Guardian Safe & Lock could order a matching replacement to complete the rekey.
Weslock locks are uncommon on homes today, as most rely on either Kwikset or Schlage. However, Weslock still appears from time to time on homes. Uriah also demonstrates how to rekey Weslock style residential locks, as the mechanism for disassembling the hardware to rekey the cylinder is slightly different than more common brands.

Installing New Locks On Doors | Leading From The Front With Uriah | Episode #6
On Today's episode of Leading From The Front with Uriah, Uriah loads up with Andrew to perform a day's fieldwork installing new locks on doors and other miscellaneous locksmith work.
Today's jobs specifically deal with fresh installing locks on doors, which involves drilling the holes and installing the hardware, as well as rekeying the locks to all work with the same key for the customer.
While most of our staff usually use a jig when installing new locks on doors, Uriah decides to show you and Andrew how to do it with nothing more than a circular saw, right angle, and chisel.

Drilling Out Best IC Cores | Leading From The Front With Uriah | Episode #3
Today we watch Uriah Leading From The Front by drilling out Best IC cores and replacing them with cores set to a new key. Best is a common brand of interchangeable core lock system used primarily in commercial and industrial locations. When an IC core system is compromised and the "change key" is lost, as in the case with these Best IC cores in the video, the locksmith resorts to drilling out the cores in order to remove and replace them.
Drilling out Best IC cores, or really any type of Interchangeable Core is a method of last resort to remove locks from doors and should not be attempted if you have your change key or have the cuts to create a new one. Drilling any lock or IC cores can be a dangerous method for even a trained locksmith, and should never be attempted by a layman.
