Why My Key Copy Doesn't Work | GSL Discussion
Ever wondered why when you test new key copies that some don't work? Even if they look near-identical to the original, everyone's had this issue at some point and been left wondering "What's the cause as to why my key copy doesn't work?" So today, we discuss the most common cause of this problem.
While automatic key cutters tend to suffer the problem discussed more than actual locksmith equipment, any kind of key cutter can become uncalibrated.
Uriah Ortiz and Brian Jarboe of Guardian Safe & Lock discuss key machine calibration and demonstrate how to perform it on our most-used shop machine, the Silca Speed 044.
Also, special thanks to our friends over at UHS hardware for sponsoring this video!
Resetting A Simplex Mechanical Push Button Lock
Today, Uriah demonstrates and explains the process of resetting a mechanical push button lock. In this case, a Simplex with knob function.
Simplex mechanical push button locks are designed to work fully independent of power. A Simplex lock is a very complicated piece of machinery; a nest of springs and other small mechanical parts all contained in a very thick, hardened steel body.

How To Fix Worn Out Car Keys | GSL Discussion
Trust a locksmith to know how to fix worn out car keys. In today's video, Uriah Ortiz and Brian Jarboe discuss and show you how locksmiths fix worn auto keys, or really any key that uses wafers or pins.
Car key blades, much like house keys or other types of keys, are made of brass. Over time, brass tend to wear out as friction shaves more and more of the material away. Pins and wafers are also commonly made of brass and wear the same as your key, only you don't see every detail on pins or wafers from the outside of the lock cylinder.
What this means is that when you get a "fresh" key cut to spec, it may still fail to operate your lock, as the wafers or pins are still as worn.

What Is A Control Key? | GSL Discussion
What is a control key, exactly? Many of our customers at Guardian Safe & Lock who are unfamiliar with commercial building construction ask us this, so today, Uriah goes over what exactly a control key is.
Control keys are keys cut in a specific manner to allow the removal of interchangeable cores from specific hardware, such as BEST or Schlage branded locks. These keys are crucial to allowing the cores to be pulled from the body to rekey or replace them.

High Security Car Key Duplication | GSL Discussion
High Security car key duplication can work a little different than standard key cutting. Today, Uriah Ortiz shows you exactly how these keys are copied!
"High security" car keys, also known as "sidewinder keys" or "laser cut keys", are a more and more common sight in modern vehicles as technology grows more complex. These high security auto keys are milled along the flat of the blade, instead of cut with a wheel along the edge as was standard with car keys for over seven decades!
Regardless of the type of key your car uses, Guardian Safe & Lock regularly makes older "double-sided" keys and modern high security car keys every day for our customers.
If you're interested in automotive locksmithing, high security car key duplication is definitely a topic to understand as they continue to dominate the vehicle market!

Different Types Of Key Cutting Machines | Locksmith Tools | GSL Discussion

Today, Uriah of Guardian Safe & Lock goes over the different types of key cutting machines we use here in our locksmith shop, and how each type is a valuable tool a locksmith usually runs their business around.
Each key cutter is an investment of several hundred to several thousand dollars, and knowing which machines you need may help you start your own locksmith business successfully!

What Is A Dead Bolt Lock? | GSL Discussion
A deadbolt lock is a type of locking mechanism that functions differently than spring-loaded latch locks. Today, Uriah discusses exactly what is a dead bolt lock in order to help those without knowledge of security hardware understand why they're so secure.
Deadbolts are exactly what the name implies, a dead bolt that is activated by either a key or thumb-turn to push a non-moving or "dead" bolt into place. This is different than a latch lock in the sense that there is no spring loading mechanism. Once the bolt falls into place, it cannot be retracted besides using the existing mechanisms standard for locking and unlocking.
There are several different types of deadbolts Uriah goes over in this video, including single-cylinder deadbolts, double-cylinder deadbolts, renters' or "keyless" deadbolts, and electronic deadbolts.

What Is A Mag Lock? | GSL Discussion
A mag lock, (also known as a mag-lock, magnetic lock, or electromagnetic lock), is an advanced piece of security hardware commonly used in commercial settings that operate off of a simple scientific principle: electromagnetism.
So What is a Mag Lock exactly? A mag lock consists of two pieces of hardware, an electromagnetic flux, and a heavy steel plate. When powered, the flux pulls on the plate which is attached to the door, securing the entrance with a force of several hundred to over a thousand pounds!
Uriah with Guardian Safe & Lock breaks down these devices further, helping to better understand these intimidating pieces of hardware for those outside of the industry or lacking experience with them.

What Is An Electric Strike? | GSL Discussion
Access control can be a very complex topic to cover. One of the basic concepts to understand is what each component is used for. So; What is an electric strike? Uriah goes over different types of electric strikes, how they fit into or on doors, and how they function.
Electric strikes are meant to replace strike plates on a door, a strike plate being the small piece of metal fitted to hold a latch or bolt inside of a door frame. You've probably seen thousands of these over the course of your life and not realized it. An electric strike is an advanced replacement for a basic strike plate and allows the door to be remotely opened and closed through an access control system.

Making A Key For A 69 Cougar | Picking The Brain | Episode #2
Today, "The Brain" Brian Jarboe returns for episode #2 of Picking The Brain making a key for a 69 Cougar.
Built on the same platform as the Ford Mustang as a "pony car", the 1969 Mercury Cougar is one of, if not the, definitive vehicle produced by Ford under the Mercury name. This vehicle follows Ford standards at the time, using the same key system as its more well-known cousin.

Rekeying A 1999 Honda Accord Ignition Cylinder
At Guardian Safe & Lock, we had a customer bring in a 1999 Honda Accord Ignition cylinder that was experiencing issues. His key was no longer properly working the cylinder after years of use. So that lead to the question of what to do with his 99 accord ignition?
He did the smart thing and contacted us at Guardian Safe And Lock. Uriah then took the opportunity to show you, our viewers, how to properly rekey a worn and aged 1999 Honda Accord Ignition.
Auto cylinders commonly use wafers instead of pins, meaning that while rekeying them is a similar process to say, a door lock, there are some differences in technique that Uriah clears up today.
