Today, Uriah sits down to answer the question "Are do not duplicate keys safer than normal keys?". Do not duplicate, or "DND" keys are stamped with the phrase "Do Not Duplicate", and are intended as a suggestion to stop people from making copies of a specific key. DND keys provide no additional security features over a standard key, other than this warning to prevent those with little or no training in the locksmithing industry from using automatic or cassette-based machines from creating copies of the specific key. Uriah goes over several types of "high-security" restricted keys, that do have additional engineering to prevent duplication, picking, or bumping of the key. These high-security keys are usually limited to a specific locksmith and cannot be purchased or copied anywhere else. Kwikset Titan is a type of deadbolt that is no longer produced by Kwikset, but is still quite common on many doors. What makes it special is a certain feature that can make rekeying a bit of a headache for locksmiths unaware of it. The Kwikset Titan deadbolt uses a control key, with a specific cut, to allow the cylinder to be pulled from the deadbolt, instead of simply removing the lock and trim entirely to rekey. In this video, Uriah goes over Schlage Everest SFIC, or Schlage Everest small format interchangeable core lock cylinders. Schlage's Everest SFIC series is used as a type of restricted keyway, meaning that parts of the key are copyrighted and only able to be purchased by a specific locksmith set up to run the restricted system on behalf of the client. What this means is that these SFIC locks are harder to bypass, and physically cannot have their Schlage Everest keys copied anywhere other than the locksmith's shop as the specific key blanks aren't for sale. SFIC also means that the locks can be rekeyed by removing the core of the cylinder, instead of removing the entire lock from the door. This makes them much simpler to rekey for commercial application. A shim is a small piece of flexible metal utilized by locksmiths to create an artificial shear line in the lock cylinder by stopping the spring-loaded driver pins from falling into place. This is accomplished by wedging the 'shim' into place between the motions of the key pins being moved with a blank key.
