Do we show honour towards each other or has society, in its failure to differentiate between right and wrong, also lost its adherence to a conventional standard of conduct? Do you live by The Honour Principle? When we hear stories about deceit, corruption, and infidelity filling the news headlines, it should make us wonder, “Where has all the honour gone?” We are witnessing a changing world where more and more people show less respect and honour and are too often indifferent or outright belligerent towards one another. In a book written by Robert Barriger, the author asks the question “Where Has All the Honor Gone?” He writes about “Experiencing the Power of the Honour Principle and How it Can Add Significance to Your Life.” This work explores and explains the critical need to restore and integrate this valuable truth of honour in all areas of life; work, family and leadership. While we are not in agreement with many of his religious beliefs, we do see that on the matter of maintaining honour he has a point.” Mr Barriger states: “To give and to receive honor is a basic human need,” and “There is a cry in the human heart for honor”. So yes, people seem to crave it but do they recognize that those they have relationships with also need it, and are they willing to give? Barriger continues, “Unfortunately our media intensive world too often celebrates superficiality with focus on people like Lady Gaga, or fantasy heroes like Spiderman. Honor is more than fame or power it is a spiritual principle and measure of character.”…“When we give honor to our spouses, families, churches and nation, we help to build our communities” Barriger concludes “The Honour Principle is not found on a list it is found in the heart and must be lived.” The word honour originates from the word esteem, meaning to respect and value. So do we respect and value those around us? Do we honour only those who are honourable? Are there daily situations where this time-proven principle should be practiced? The principle of honour needs to be applied regularly in the home, on the job, in government and even on our roads and highways. There used to be a time when it meant a great deal to people. Men would meet on the “field of honour” and be willing to give their lives and die that they might retain their honour. The “field of honour” was known as the place where duels were fought, where men would stand back to back, pistol in hand, walk 10-20 paces then turn around and fire!! I am certainly not condoning dueling as a means to defend your honour, but what it illustrates is that a person’s honour meant something. They would go to their grave to ensure their honour remained intact. Women also once took great care to live their lives in such a way that they would never “lose their honour.” Chastity was one of the codes of honour, a concept not widely practiced today. Unfortunately however, chastity has all too seldom been considered honourable on the part of men through the ages.” A well-known United States Military Academy prides itself on being an institution where this principle still has high value. Those enrolled at West Point are still guided by the motto “Duty, Honor, Country”. West Point stresses the development of cadets intellectually, physically, militarily, ethically, spiritually, and socially. They even have an honour code: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do”. Those are high ideals—the honour principle is widely promoted at that institution but no doubt there have been failures along the way. Sadly though, honour is not being held in the highest regard or valued as it once was. The daily news is often filled with examples of men and women, leaders in their respective fields, who have come up far too short. These individuals get caught up in their own weaknesses and as a result have failed those who once looked to them as respected leaders. In the end their behaviour affected their careers and focus—they did not lead their lives above reproach—they lost respect and honour and character. They did not make wise decisions.

For most of history, daily working hours were limited by the sun to an average of 12, which meant that people would spend the remainder of their hours in their homes with their families, socializing, or sleeping. And then came electricity, and with it, the seemingly innocent and innocuous light bulb; an object that few would consider being the culprit of many modern struggles. With electric light, factories could operate 24 hours a day. As darkness was no longer an excuse, employers demanded more and more of their employees’ time Working hours grew long and family and social interaction suffered. Workers would often suffer exhaustion, ill-health or even premature death from overwork. In more recent times, working conditions have generally improved throughout much of the industrialized world. Modern automation and robotics have revolutionized manufacturing. Many jobs have moved from the factory floor to the office tower. Yet, with all the changes to the modern workplace, many still struggle to achieve a balance between time spent at work and personal time. In addition to 24 hour light, the advent of 24 hour instant communication has led many workers to feel obligated to take work-related calls and emails after hours or while on holiday. In our current situation, working from home has added an additional layer of complication for balancing work time and personal time for millions of people. Sociopaths and narcissists use it to abuse, manipulate, and control people. The term was named after a British stage play "Gaslight", which was also made into a US movie, where a man tried to convince his wife she was crazy by confusing her and controlling her environment. Gaslighting starts with little white lies that slowly, over time, get bigger. And those lies begin to reshape and control the way a person thinks and feels about themselves, and about the real world around them. It is used to break down and destroy objective reality; real, factual information. As lies are repeated over and over with boldness and authority, people begin to doubt the external objective world and accept lies from the abuser as their new reality. As we experience vacant streets, closed shopping outlets, eerily quiet playgrounds, the outcry for self-isolation, social distancing and the current economic instability will undoubtedly result in an unspeakable rise in depression. The world has been thrust into a chaotic limbo by the global pandemic at the hands of the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19. While the world looks for a cure, Erasmus’ quote, “prevention is better than cure” comes to mind. Could this pandemic have been prevented? COVID-19, along with other similar viruses are defined by the term zoonosis—the process by which a disease can be transmitted from animals to humans, with the most common transmission type being foodborne. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states: “Each year, 1 in 6 Americans get sick from eating contaminated food. Eating or drinking something unsafe, such as unpasteurized milk, undercooked meat or eggs, or raw fruits and vegetables that are contaminated with feces from an infected animal.” –Zoonotic Diseases, cdc.gov COVID-19 is not the first of its kind; in fact, let's go back to 1918 when the world was plunged into darkness. “At the time, there were no effective drugs or vaccines to treat this killer flu strain. Citizens were ordered to wear masks, schools, theatres and businesses were shuttered and bodies piled up in makeshift morgues before the virus ended its deadly global march.” - Spanish Flu, History.com First observed in Europe, The United States and Asia, the virus spread throughout the world claiming approximately 50 million lives with over 500 million people being affected. Many hypotheses have surfaced alluding to the origin of this virus, yet the results have been inconclusive. The common factor in all the research, however, points to an avian-source. Whether transferred to humans directly or through a medium such as a pig, the transmission type was most probably the result of eating such animals. Fast forward to 1981 when the world experienced the first case of HIV/AIDS. “[Being] first observed in American gay communities but is believed to have developed… [in] West Africa in the 1920s.” – Pandemics that Changed History, History.com This wasting disease destroys an individual’s immune system. The result of a weakened immune system can lead to one’s demise. Diseases that the body would typically fight off becomes unstoppable. According to the National Geographic, “It is now widely accepted that humans contracted HIV from chimpanzees, probably by butchering them for bushmeat.” – HIV Originated with Monkeys, Not Chimps, Study Finds, nationalgeographic.com The devastating impact of HIV/AIDS has resulted in an estimated 35 million lives having been lost to date. As the death toll rises each year, the onslaught of this disease leaves its victims with little hope of recovery. In most recent times, SARS – severe acute respiratory syndrome, MERS – middle east respiratory syndrome and H1N1 – or swine flu have once again claimed many lives. It is suspected that these viruses were transmitted to humans through a vector animal, such as the pig (in the case of SARS) and the camel (In the case of MERS). Animals which are considered food by many. COVID-19 is no exception. Although the cause has not been confirmed, the origin appears linked to a meat market in the Hubei province of China. As the virus continues to spread around the globe, borders have closed and quarantine measures have been implemented. The plea to stay at home is echoing around the world. Countries are expending billions of dollars to fight against the spread of COVID-19 and trillions in attempts to nullify its economic impact. While the world focuses on finding a suitable vaccine, others are concerned about the preparations for the next pandemic, yet the simplest solution n eludes them. When combined, all these diseases have claimed close to 100 million lives—lives that need not have been lost. Instead of focusing on a cure, it is possible to prevent such outbreaks in the first place. As individuals and as a collective, we must recognize that our actions impact the world on a whole. Therefore, we ought to be more cognizant with our food choices. We need to consider what is food and what is not, realizing that not everything that moves is good to eat.

Stuart Wachowicz is a former Director of Curriculum for Edmonton Public schools in Alberta. Here he explains one of the fundamental issues which plague our educational institutions. Society has allowed radicals to make accommodation demands of school systems that are fully irrational, wasteful of money and instructional talent, and worst of all denying our children the opportunity to maximize their potential. To allow this is unreasonable and unprofessional of senior administration. Parents have every right to expect the best education possible for their children, and to be in a safe environment where students comply with rules and standards of behaviour.

Is it possible that we pass on genetic traits to our descendants based on habits we form in our lifetime? When a sperm reaches an egg, a dramatic yet microscopic chemical reaction takes place. At the very moment of fertilization, the baby’s genes and sex are determined. It is well known that fathers pass on their genetic makeup to their children; however, a recent study in Denmark suggests that fathers pass on more than just DNA! Epigenetic changes are not part of DNA but are attached instead attached to it. Studies suggest that epigenetic molecules called microRNA respond to environmental influences and in turn alter the genetic behaviour of the offspring. Love can feel good, but love can also feel lousy. Love is seen through actions, and many loving actions don't feel good. Yet people are fooled, time and time again, confusing emotion and feeling with love. Love is giving respect to parents and those in authority. Even if they’re wrong sometimes. Love is giving kindness, mercy, and forgiveness to all people, even those with whom we do not agree, and even those who may not be kind to us. Love is being faithful, loyal to our wife or husband. Love is not stealing from our boss, school, or anyone else. Love is being honest, even if lying might get us ahead in the short term. Love is being happy, grateful, and thankful for what we do have, not living a life obsessed with materialism and always wanting what we don't have. Loving others in this way can be difficult, it can make us vulnerable as some may not choose to treat us the same way. Historically, most youth have showed respect for their elders through simple gestures such as standing up when an elder enters a room or offering them a seat on public transportation. It was taken for granted as the thing to do. This tradition is less common now. While this may seem like a minor facet of the Generation Gap, it is indicative of a widening viewpoint held by differing generations.

We will eventually find that a party lifestyle loses its appeal. For example, celebrities with unlimited resources may reach a point where they see life as pointless and unsatisfying, not worth living—and so we hear of suicide attempts on the news. Some of you watching this may have also lived this life with no restrictions and restraint, and have gotten to the point where the sense of satisfaction and fulfillment has lost its appeal. This brings us to a philosophical dilemma. Is it wrong to have fun and enjoy life? Should life become mostly serious and predictable? Should life include restrictions and if so, how far do these go? Can we have both a profitable and enjoyable existence?

There is a plague in our midst that costs the global economy billions of dollars every year, and claims victims from the poorest to the richest among us. This modern epidemic is eroding health, wealth and happiness of young and old alike. This plague is not caused by a virus, yet it has spread like the most virulent of contagions. When one suffers from depression, all seems hopeless with seemingly no escape from distress. In this condition it is difficult to be grateful for anything and yet finding ways to show gratitude is one of the most effective natural ways to combat depression.

With more and more people opting to work and learn from home, the already prevalent trend towards increased exposure to electronic devices has accelerated dramatically, especially among the young. Parents and educators need to seriously consider the potential ramifications this may have on the well-being of our children.

Depression can prevent us from leading a normal life, however, there are ways of curing our mental challenges. Here are three methods to help ourselves and others to climb out of the psychological pitfalls we can find ourselves in.

On the 19th of May 1845, Sir John Franklin, an experienced 59-year-old Arctic explorer, set sail from Greenhithe, England. Under his command was the nineteenth British expedition attempting to traverse the fabled Northwest Passage, seeking a shorter route to Asia. Franklin was leading two modified warships, the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror, on what would ultimately become the greatest disaster in 300 years of British exploration. Almost sixty years after Franklin’s expedition, in the summer of 1903, a small 45-ton fishing vessel named the Gjøa (pronounced “joa” in North America) set sail from Oslo under the midnight sun, in another attempt to finally traverse the Northwest Passage. The tall Norwegian captain of this vessel was Roald Amundsen.

The mantra "Defund the Police" is heard everywhere today, from the inner-city streets to the halls of power. Will the better nature of humanity prevail in the absence of law enforcement? What can we learn from history?

In 1934, Swedish archaeologist Folke Bergman excavated a burial site near Ürümchi in Northwestern China. The inhabitants of the tombs were not what you would expect for the region. They were Caucasian in appearance, with red hair and tartan clothing. Bergman reportedly noted how similar the remains were to Bronze Age Danish burial sites with their embroidered clothing and the bodies entombed in what appeared to be upside-down boat coffins. If these were the mummified remains of Indo-Europeans, what were they doing buried in ancient China? This is the story of the Celts who migrated to the far east.

Frustration over inflation is a real and increasing problem. No one is happy to arrive at the checkout aisle only to discover that the same basket of groceries they purchased last month for one price now costs 7 percent more.
