I measured 3 different points on the rotor :
- 1st point: 26.97 mm
- 2nd point: 26.95 mm
- 3rd point: 26.96 mm
All three points fall within runout limit specification. None of the three points deviate more than 0.025 mm in (run-out) measurement. The most they deviate is 0.020 mm. Which is less than 0.025 deviation.
This rotor is good for it's 3rd use.
Only afterwards will I replace the rotors after the 3rd use.
Other vehicles will vary with rotor thickness specifications.
Consult a repair manual for your own vehicle to determine an accurate reading for minimum thickness.

General Population Falls For This #1 Mechanic Scam Every Time.
Learning about dealing with mechanic scams is one thing, but actually being at the shop and navigating shady tricks is another.
Do one thing that will increase your chances of avoiding 80% of shop scams by doing 20% of the work up front. Prevention is always better than damage control; especially when it comes to dealing with crooked mechanics.
And that is getting your "QUOTE" in writing! This will help you avoid being ripped off hundreds of dollars for your car repair. You can always use it to claim any money back if ever you're overcharged. Without it, you will have no proof to show regulators that you got ripped off.
Scotty Kilmer and the Mechanic OC are great people to learn from as well when it comes to tips on dealing with mechanics. But I like to dig things they haven't touched well on. Enjoy the video.

[Hydraulics Explained] How Automatic Transmission Fluid Works With Valve Body: PART 3
Watch this 3D animation to learn how the valve body works in an automatic transmission. This model has been modified to a degree and detracts from any manufactured valve body. However the overall concepts are still the same and will work with practical application.
This animation will include most of the systems of the valve body: the three main body components, solenoids, shift valves, a check ball, and an oil pump.
We will see the operation of the transmission as it shifts gears and applies clutches. We go over the hydraulic circuit the transmission fluid takes when selecting each gear.
This is an engineering concept that has been overly simplified so that any beginner can learn how the valve body works in an automatic transmission.

How Gears & Clutch Packs Work for 6 Speed Automatic Transmission: PART 2
Take a look at the bare minimum when setting up the automatic transmission. This 3D animation will show the general overview of how the auto trans works. There are modifications made to this gearbox that detract from the original.
Watch how each gear is selected when engaging clutch packs.
This video well go slightly more in depth than Lesics "Automatic Transmission, How it works?" with clutch pack examples.
Thomas Schwenke and Skyline Tutorials do an okay job as well. But being close up to more components does help with the learning process.
This is one of many kinds of automatic transmission. Many other types are designed differently and use different parts, but essentially they are all planetary gear systems. And they will all function generally the same way.

Take a look at the bare minimum when setting up the automatic transmission. This 3D animation will show the general overview of how the auto trans works. There are modifications made to this gearbox that detract from the original.
It all boils down to three parts: the input shaft, intermediate shaft, and the output shaft. As long as you can find a way to transfer power from the input to the output , you essentially have a moving vehicle.

Quickest Way to Fix Leaking Power Steering Hose | Cheap N' Easy.
With this video it's possible to fix this type of power steering leak within 30 minutes.
Someone not used to this repair may take at least an hour up to three hours.
If you've lost steering power and fluid has drained out, here's what to do.
First determine if your rack and pinion's blown a seal, or if a hose has ruptured.
If you can spot the hose to be leaking you're in better shape.
Next is to identify if the high pressure line or low pressure line is leaking.
High pressure lines usually require an OEM replacement hose (or find the same one from a junkyard).
But if you've got a low pressure leak, you can fix this problem with the cheapest solution in the quickest amount of time. Make sure to find the correct PSI specifications for the low pressure/return hose you'll need.
Continental is a brand you can trust.
The hoses are cheap and you can spend around $30 total to do this repair:
- Hose $4.00
- Power steering fluid to top up $26

How to Become an Auto Body Technician: With No Experience or Schooling
Getting into Auto Body can be a bit challenging. It's hard to land straight into doing prep work or painting right off the bat.
But you can get yourself into the field starting from the bottom. This is the route about 90% of people will take when becoming an Auto Body Technician.
And that is to start out as a detailer. You'll be responsible for making sure cars are clean before they are handed out to the techs to work on. Then once the work repair is done, your job is to make the car as clean and shiny as possible to return to customers.
This route will likely take at least a year of detailer before employers will move you up to prep work/painting.
It also doesn't hurt to have skills in other automotive fields so employers feel confident to bring you in the door.

How to Become a Self-Employed Automotive Apprentice.
Although rare, it is possible to get started as a self employed apprentice in the automotive world. In this video I’ll offer a quick breakdown on how it’s possible to get into it, and some of the pros and cons going down this route.
So how do you get this deal?
The first answer is you need to be overqualified to approach employers this way. If you haven’t seen the video already, I explain how to become an overqualified 1st year mechanic. I’ll link that below.
Once you’ve become overqualified, you can now approach any employer and ask if they’re looking for contract mechanics.
Since you’ll have the skills to back you up, employers may consider hiring you out as a contractor.
It’s even possible to get this type of contract as a 1st year apprentice. But again you’d have to be an overqualified 1st year to accept this kind of deal.
The pros for this are:
- You get to set your schedule and rates more favorable to you
o Which means if you prefer part time, you don’t have work as a zombie for the employer 5 days a week overtime all year long
o You’ll get more time to carve out any side hustle you’re building towards
o Plus, in Canada the apprenticeship board recognizes self employed apprentices. Which means you can work towards completing your apprenticeship hours at your own pace.
- You can also ask for higher wages since the employer wont be paying for your health insurance
o A win-win for both parties
Which brings up the cons of this route:
- You’ll need to have your own health insurance to protect yourself from workplace hazards
o You could work as a contractor with no insurance protection but if you get hurt at work the employer isn’t responsible for any injuries
- You’re also not covered by any government labor board should the employer decide not to pay you
o Which means you’ll have to take on small jobs first so you don’t lose much if the employer doesn’t pay
So there you go, now you know how to become a self employed apprentice.
Although fairly risky to go down this route of contractor, it is something you can consider if you’re planning on working on other projects while leveling up your automotive skill.
You’ll get to live life on your own terms and have a side hustle you look forward to every time you wake up.
The risks are high, but so are the rewards.

If you’re having trouble getting into apprenticeship, this video might help you out so you can get started sooner. I’ll also explain how you can get hired as a 1st year apprentice on day 1.
Now there could be a number of reasons why it’s taking longer for you to get into apprenticeship. And I know because I’ve been there. But I’ll get into that later on in the video and the different ways you can shape your own path to enter apprenticeship.
So how do you get into 1st year apprenticeship on day 1?
The short answer is: you need to be overqualified before approaching the employer.
So what do I mean by being overqualified?
Basically that means you can fix almost every part of the vehicle with a wide range of skills. Things like windshields, tires, electric repairs; practically everything.
You essentially have to be like a 3rd year apprentice to become qualified for this kind of opportunity.
But then the question arises: how do you become like a 3rd year when you’re just starting out?
Which is another very good question; that has good news in the end.
The first answer is, that it’s going to take time go get to 3rd year level when you’re a complete beginner. So you’ll have to start small repairing vehicles and work your way up gradually. You’ll have to put in at least 3 years to 5 years to get good at automotive repair.
Which means you’ll want to move around shop to shop to learn the different skills you need to reach that level.
Q: But then you might ask, why move around shop to shop when you can stay in one place? Don’t most shops promote you to 1st year apprenticeship after just 1 year anyways?
Why should I spend an extra 3-5 years to get 1st year apprenticeship?
Yes. Success stories like that do exist. And it’s what you should be aiming for in the beginning.
But in reality however, most techs don’t get into apprenticeship after putting in just a years worth of labor. For most it takes much longer to get into apprenticeship to get started. And that can be for any number of reasons:
Such as working for an employer who doesn’t pay well, or offers empty promises of promotion.
It could be due to toxic work environment. And instead being arrested for flying off the handle, it’s better to relocate to other shops.
Or your priorities shift as years go by. Maybe you have other opportunities you like come your way not automotive related.
Things are always changing.
But if you can get into apprenticeship sooner, there’s no reason to move around.
But again, this video is for those having difficulty getting in and wanting an alternative route to apprenticeship. Which also means you won’t waste any time moving shop to shop for whatever your reasons are.
As long as you’re picking up the skills from places you go to, you’re becoming more qualified as time goes on. You’re getting paid and living life on your terms while you progress.
So now when you approach an employer 3-5 years later, you can mention your skills during the next interview. Just ask if they’re willing to sign you up for apprenticeship before they hire you. If so, you’re in a much stronger position to get signed up on day 1.
Even if you can’t get 1st year apprenticeship on day one, you can still negotiate better terms to start apprenticeship sooner now since you’ve got the skills to back it up. You could ask to start apprenticeship after a 3-month performance review instead. Many employers will have no problem with this.
This beats putting in another year for someone just to sign up for apprenticeship.
So there you go. How to get apprenticeship on day one if you’re having difficulty getting in.

If you’re planning to get into automotive apprenticeship soon, I’ll explain how it works here in North America and talk a bit about the blue book. Each province and state will differ in the books they use for their apprenticeship, but it’ll all be similar in practice.
I’m using the blue book issued in Alberta.
So how does one get into apprenticeship?
Getting registered can be a bit of challenge and take some time in the beginning.
Basically if an employer offers to apprentice you, he/she will say this to you first and foremost.
Its not something you can just land upon on the first day of starting work. But it isn’t impossible. At the end of the video I’ll mention where you can learn more about it.
But basically, it works like this. You find a shop to work in and the employer hires you. Then once you’re hired, you’ll generally work for the employer for 1 year without being promoted.
Some shops may promote sooner, some may promote much later.
Avoid the shops that promote 2 years or later with your employment. Chances are they wont promote you at all.
But 1 year is typical among the industry.
After 1 year, if you’re still working for the same employer, he/she may approach you to sign you up. Typically that means you’re a good worker in their eyes, and they’re willing to give you a shot.
Some employers may even offer you apprenticeship and pay for all technical training.
After hearing this from your employer you then call to the apprenticeship board in your area to let them know you want to sign up.
Then they will get you to sign forms and verify that your employer is qualified to apprentice you and to make sure you actually got the go-ahead from your employer.
Once all the paperwork is done, the apprenticeship board will send you an apprentice record book, or a blue book in this instance.
Once you’ve received this blue book you can officially start logging hours and college training time towards your apprenticeship.
I can’t disclose the contents inside the blue book due to copyright, but essentially it will record things like engine repair all the way to HVAC and electrical. It will even have certain number of hours needed in those fields for you to complete.
Of course the first year you probably wont be dealing with HVAC and electric circuits, but as you progress that will be required.
Here in Alberta you need 1560 hours worked for 1 year of apprenticeship, which is about 10 month working full time. And you need 2 months of technical training in the same year.
But if you prefer to go at a slower pace, you could finish your 1 year apprentice after 2 years. This will also depend on if your province or state allows a longer time lapse.
So if you don’t enjoy working 5 full days a week like me, you could work 5 half days instead. Or whatever ratio you prefer.
As long as you get the total hours you need to complete year 1, you should have no problems moving up to year 2. And so on and so forth.
But if you enjoy working full time, more power to you. You’ll be right on track.
After graduating year 4, you can now become eligible to take the Journeyman licensing test. Once you’ve passed that you’ve now become a full fledged Journeyman.
In Canada, passing the Real Seal Journeyman exam means you are recognized as qualified across all provinces of Canada. People will hire you much sooner on the spot than a person without it.
So that’s essentially how apprentice works in the automotive field.

How Old Is Too Old to Become a Mechanic? Here's the Right Age...
If you’re thinking of getting into the automotive field soon, here’s some good news.
It really doesn’t matter what age you are. Whether you’re 30, 40, or 50; it’s never too late to get into the field.
Quick story…
As a matter of fact, I’ve seen people in their 40s and 50s working in entry level jobs at the dealership.
During my practicum at Honda, I saw both a 40 year old and a 60 year old man working in the lube bays changing out oil. All they did was change out engine oil.
At the back of the dealership in the big bays, there were mechanics my age and younger working on bigger jobs.
All the roles were reversed at this Honda dealership.
Typically you would think more younger people would work in the lube bays while the seniors worked in the big ones.
Anyone Can Enter the Automotive Field:
So there you go, now you know it doesn’t matter what age you are. As long as you’re willing to learn and work, companies are willing to give you a job.
Dealerships/mechanic shops will start you off small, but who doesn’t need a laborer who can bring in cashflow?
As long as you can do that for any company you approach, you’re as good as gold.
As time goes on and you develop your skills, you’ll naturally move up to do bigger jobs to become a full fledged mechanic.

Flat Tire? How Long Tire Plugs Will Last.

Although patching your tire is the best option overall, it usually costs more and is typically repaired in a mechanic shop.
Also if your tire is brand new and has a manufacturers warranty, you may qualify for nail damage.
Then it is best not to plug your tire as that will likely void your manufacturers warranty.
But if your tires no longer have warranty, then the next best option is to use tire plugs. They're cheap and resilient. And if used correctly, your tires can last up to 2 years with no adverse affects.
