Reign - yet more work with electric clippers 4 June 2024
Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. As with any suggestions on any subject you must weigh them out for yourself and proceed accordingly - at your own risk.
This particular horse is an extremely slow learner - so we keep working at it - and ever ever ever so slowly she is getting better. Most horses which are started out right master standing calmly and cooperatively for the electric clippers in 1-3 sessions using the advance and retreat method of acclimation shown here on 3 different horses https://griffes.tripod.com/Electric_Clipper_Training.html
Remember to intentionally, on purpose, learn of God each day by prayerfully reading, studying, and pondering upon God's word each day. Talk to God in prayer as your Heavenly Father who would like for you to be His friend. Find out what He would like you to do for Him as His friend and go and do it for Him as His friend. Yes very intentionally, very much on purpose, become the friend of God. And have a blessed day!!

Nutmeg - trailer loading-unloading 4 June 2024
Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. As with any suggestions on any subject you must weigh them out for yourself and proceed accordingly - at your own risk.
This is the very end of two sessions teaching Nutmeg to willingly back out of the trailer. I tried quite a few ways to try to get Nutmeg to back and met with frustration. I did manage to get her to back out using a surcingle and driving lines attached to a Four Knot Halter during session one but she did not do it willingly and she did not make any notable progress towards doing it willingly. At the start of Session Two I had my mare Avi show Nutmeg how to properly load and unload - because sometimes seeing another horse do something is all it takes to get a horse in training to figure it out - that was not the case with Nutmeg. I did get Nutmeg to back out several times by literally backing Avi into Nutmeg's head/chest - but Nutmeg still did not make the connection of backing out willingly and calmly - she remained VERY resistive. So I put Avi away and put the surcingle and driving lines back on. I got Nutmeg to load front feet only and calmly back out a number of times. But when I had her fully load she again got resistive about backing. Eventually something clicked a bit in Nutmeg's brain and I could get her to walk all the way to the front of the trailer then back her with the lines until her hind hooves were close to the edge, stop, walk back to the front and repeat calmly several times. Then when she was, at long long long last, finally backing calmly and willingly while in the trailer I asked her to "down, down" and she calmly stepped down off the trailer. We repeated this and she got better and better. The video picks up at that point.

Reign - highlights of solo ride at Waterloo 31 May 2024
Reign is a 3yr old TWH who has logged 226.7 road and trail miles as of the end of this ride - since starting training 15 March 2024. Yes I VERY firmly believe that it in addition to solid foundational training it takes REAL miles going somewhere to make a good horse.

Nutmeg second session under saddle - second ride - 28 May 2024
Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. As with any suggestions on any subject you must weigh them out for yourself and proceed accordingly - at your own risk.
This is an over two hour video of the entire second session under saddle. It is all slow and easy work to get the horse pupil to reason out that doing what the master asks is the best choice - the easiest choice - it is what you want to choose for yourself to do.
You can see me applying the two principles of horse training which MUST be simultaneously applied. (1) Make the right thing easier work and the wrong thing harder work aka "Make the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard." (2) Horses learn they did the right thing when the pressure is released. (Which means that dropping the cue instantly when the horse did the correct response is KEY to getting them to learn.)
We continued to work on teaching neck reining - which I start teaching on the first ride. We started teaching the basic lateral movements of hip yield aka pass around the forehand AND shoulder yield aka pass around the haunches aka pivot.
Avi - first time harrowing garden - 25 May 2024
Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. As with any suggestions on any subject you must weigh them out for yourself and proceed accordingly - at your own risk.
This is part of a longer training session to start teaching Avi to harrow the garden. Working a horse in harness that is well trained to drive but does not get used in harness regularly needs to be approached with serious caution. You need to pay attention to their body language telling you they are worried about something OR they do not feel confident doing something. With Avi who had not had the harness on in many months (though she is frequently ridden) this meant harnessing her up on Stand-Stay https://griffes.tripod.com/standstay.html - then line driving her until she was completely calm and ready to do a swinging side pass turn each way on command - then dragging the singletree while line driving until she was completely calm doing it - then pulling the section of spring tooth harrow around the driveway in transport position so she got used to the rattling sounds of this never before pulled (by her) farm implement - until she was completely calm doing it. NOTE - each progressively step was done UNTIL she was completely calm doing it. NOTE - each progressively step was done UNTIL she was completely calm doing it. NOTE - each progressively step was done UNTIL she was completely calm doing it. (intentionally repeated thrice for emphasis) At that point we went over to the lower part of the garden and her confidence just was not adequate to do the task before her - she stopped and stood still to indicate she was not courageous enough to do it (you gotta know your horse or you might have read that wrong). So I stepped up to her head and took the lead rope and that bolstered her confidence enough she pulled the Spring Tooth Harrow while it was harrowing the garden soil (doing the final fitting). She had a blind bridle on so at times trying to stay near me she got too close (stepped on back of my boot) because she could not see me beside her head. And I tried dropping back to drive her with the lines and succeeded for a short while several times. We then moved to the smaller yet upper garden - and that you can see on video. After some more leading by me Avi gathers up enough courage and confidence to be driving and even do some pretty good sweeping side pass turns each direction (Gee, gee, gee = Right) (Haw, haw, haw = Left). Just as we completed the upper garden Avi's confidence fell a bit and I had to step up to her head and lead her again. So while her performance was a long ways from perfect Avi did pretty good for her first time pulling a spring tooth harrow especially when that first time was in such a tight spot. IF you are not VERY experienced driving a horse and doing work in harness with a horse I would NOT suggest starting a horse pulling any new to it implement in a tight spot requiring precise maneuvering. It is much better to start them out where they can pull the implement in long straight lines with gentle turns at the end of the field.
If you would like to see this same upper garden plot being harrowed by a FAR MORE experienced driving horse, Kate, in 2010 you can watch this video https://rumble.com/v3mxowp-harrowing-the-upper-garden-with-real-horsepower-spring-2010.html Avi may some day have the driving skill of Kate - it really depends on if I use her in harness enough to build those skills or not. I even used Kate to plow snow https://griffes.tripod.com/snowplow.html which is a job Avi has never done (I would need to build a new oak V-plow as the original one is no more.)

Reign - yet more electric clipper training - 24 May 2024

Slowly, ever so very slowly, Reign is catching on to the concept of holding her head down and being calm to get her bridle path clipped. Most horses would have had it down stone cold LONG LONG LONG ago - so let this give you faith that if you have a very slow learning horse it can catch on IF you will be insistently consistent as many times as it takes for it to eventually reason it out that cooperating while being clipped is pretty easy to do. Yes it may try your patience but hang in there and have faith that even a slow learner can catch on eventually.

At approx 4min34sec in to this video my Start Right!! process begins - intentionally defusing the 4 anti-predator triggers associated with mounting a horse. At 17min43sec (13min9sec later) I am fully sitting up on Nutmeg for the very first time she has ever had a person sitting on her back and she is standing like a statue. This webpage explains the Start Right!! process https://griffes.tripod.com/startright.html Yes if you are going to start your own horse I do believe you should use my Start Right!! process so that you KNOW you intentionally defused all 4 anti-predator triggers associated with mounting a horse the very first time. Obviously it is your choice - your decision - completely your own risk because you are deciding for yourself.

Nutmeg - learning to be ponied at walk and trot, etc. - 20 May 2024
Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. As with any suggestions on any subject you must weigh them out for yourself and proceed accordingly - at your own risk.
Nutmeg, the 3yr old Gypsy Vanner filly/mare came into training Friday evening 17 May 2024 and her owner led her twice around the small lot fence in both directions to ensure she knew where the fence was. On Saturday 18 May 2024 I did the first training session which also included trimming her hooves. You can see that video here if you would like to - Trimming Nutmeg's hooves 18 May 2024
https://rumble.com/v4w1j2t-trimming-nutmegs-hooves-18-may-2024.html -- This video shows most of the very next training session done mounted on my mare Avi who is my helper horse. I apologize for failing to get the camera angle set optimally at the start. I ended up cutting 19 minutes and 20 seconds of video out due to that time being spent primarily where the viewer could not see what is happening. I initially worked on "controlling herd movement" which is the job of the boss mare in a herd - thus by controlling herd movement the trainee learns that you are the herd boss. This is done just as slow and calm as possible because horses like us humans learn better when we are calm and much more poorly when we are anxious. I then taught Nutmeg to pony (be led off a horse) at a walk and later in the video at a trot. And I also spent some time using a small flag to acclimate Nutmeg to being touched by something unfamiliar and also having something unfamiliar move rapidly near her on either side and on top of her. The flag work starts about 28:40 or so if you want to jump to that.
During much of the video I am too far from the mic to be heard. So ask questions if you have a question come to mind - no need to guess - just ask.

Nutmeg, the 3yr old Gypsy Vanner filly arrived not quite 24 hours before this video was recorded. Per her owner she had only ever had her hooves trimmed in stocks by the Amish. He told me she definitely needed her hooves trimmed but he did not know how she would stand when not in the stocks. This video is raw and uncut showing the entire train and trim session starting from after I grabbed my farrier tools until the last hoof was trimmed. All the goofing around she did (never anything big and violent) made it take 2-3 times as long as it would have taken had she stood perfectly still and cooperatively. IF you wisely wish to teach your own horse to stand calmly and cooperatively while it is having its hooves trimmed or is being shod I outline 3 methods of training on this webpage https://griffes.tripod.com/stand.html

As with any suggestions on any subject you must weigh them out for yourself and proceed accordingly - at your own risk.
Reign, the 3 yr old TWH, was first acclimated to the flag being near her, flapping in the wind above her, and eventually actually touching her body, neck and head while saddled but in hand (me on the ground.) Then while in hand I carried the flag as a lead her around our driveway turn around loop - leading her first from the near side (left) and then next from the off side (right). I then set the flag against the picket fence - so it would not blow over - and also so after mounting I could side pass over and pick up the flag. I then carried the flag around without putting it in the flag carrier until Reign proved she was going to be civil - then set it back against picket fence. We then picked it back up and this time put it in the flag carrier attached to my right stirrup and walked around more including what was captured on video which included side passing both directions carrying the USA flag on Monday 6 May 2024.

Reign is still working on completely understanding that her best choice is to stand still completely calm with her head down low enough that a person can see what they are doing while using the electric clippers on her. She is proving to be a VERY slow learner about this skill - as she has with some other skills. But I trust that once she finally figures this puzzle out she will do it well just like she has with other skills she struggled to learn but now does very well.

Reign, the 3yr old TWH filly, started in training on 15 March 2024 and today 30 April 2024 we are doing a bit of a progress test. Testing some of the skills she is learning. Being sent into and tail tugged out of a horse trailer. Stand-Stay for currying and saddling. Being responsible to pick up your rider. Three basic lateral movements - pass around the haunches - pass around the forehand - side pass. Four methods of working a gate - push away walk through - push away back through - pull toward walk through - pull toward back through. Checking the mail. This is a horse being started - NOT a finished horse - so she doesn't do anything perfectly - she does it like a horse that is learning. In the process of learning Reign has logged 121.4 road and trail miles while in training to date - from 15 March - 30 April 2024.

2 horses send in and tail tug out repeatedly - 9 April 2024
Reign the 3 yr old TWH has largely mastered being sent in to the trailer and being tail tugged out of the trailer calmly. So today we took it up a notch and had Reign go in before Avi - then after - then before - repeatedly. So how did she do? You be the judge.

Reign picking up rider 9 April 2024
Reign, the 3yr old TWH filly had a hard time learning to pick up her rider from a raised mounting platform. So does she have it figured out now - the fifth time we have worked on it?

Reign - pick up your rider from a raised mounting platform - 5 April 2024
Reign has decidedly struggled with learning to pick up her rider from a raised mounting platform. Her first session, which is where most horses have the basic concept very well figured out, she never seemed to figure it out at all - ended seeming totally clueless about what was being requested. Second session she made a big step forward and yet barely started to figure it out - still not where most horses are in the middle of their first session. And in this third session she still struggled at first but then the light switch seemed to click on - like "oh, I understand what you are asking me now." So here is hoping she now is well on her way to mastering the skill of picking up your rider from a raised mounting platform.

Reign - send in tail tug out - 5 April 2024
Reign, the 3yr old Tennessee Walking Horse filly, has pretty well mastered being sent in to the horse trailer and being tail tugged out of the horse trailer. In this video she does it just out of the pasture - then gets saddled and does it again with full tack on. She will keep getting better and better at this skill as it is used but she has mastered the basics now.

Reign - send in tail tug out of slots 1-4 - 1 April 2024
In this training session Reign was sent first into slot 1 (furthest forward) and tail tugged out - then slot 2 - then slot 3 - then slot 4. She has got the send in part down pretty well. She understands the tail tug back up signal but has not committed to do it a long ways - definitely better doing it just a short ways.
