Twisting Fury: The Science Behind the EF-4 Tornado That Ravaged Iowa
During one of the most active U.S. tornado seasons, a powerful EF-4 tornado devastated Greenfield, Iowa, with winds of 185 mph. The destructive tornado destroyed homes, downed wind turbines and power lines, snapped trees, and shredded roofs.
It’s been one of the busiest U.S. tornado seasons in years. As of May 28, National Weather Service meteorologists have confirmed 875 tornadoes. One of the strongest and most destructive was a powerful twister that formed in southwestern Iowa on May 21, 2024. The tornado drew a line of destruction for nearly 44 miles and cut through the town of Greenfield, Iowa.
The tornado was one of a rash of twisters that formed when a cold front produced a line of strong thunderstorms that tracked through the Midwest. An especially large and tall storm with rotating updrafts (a supercell) produced an EF-4 tornado, which hit Greenfield with peak winds of 185 miles (300 kilometers) per hour.

Webb Uncovers Most Distant Known Galaxy – “Most Significant Extragalactic Discovery to Date”
Astronomers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have discovered the earliest and most distant galaxies known, dating back to just 300 million years after the Big Bang, a major milestone in understanding the universe’s early stages.
An international team of astronomers announced the discovery of the two earliest and most distant galaxies yet confirmed, dating back to only 300 million years after the Big Bang. This significant finding, achieved with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), marks a major milestone in the study of the early universe. These galaxies were discovered by the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) team, co-led by UC Santa Cruz astronomer Brant Robertson.
“This discovery is completely unanticipated and is likely to be seen as the most significant extragalactic discovery with JWST to date,” said Robertson, an astronomy and astrophysics professor who sits on the JADES steering committee. He is the lead author on the first of three papers reporting various aspects of the discovery.

Decoding HIV’s Defenses: Innovative Vaccine Strategy Shows Promise
Results from NIH-funded animal models will inform the development of vaccines for humans.
Using advanced immunological techniques, researchers have effectively activated the immune systems of animals to produce rare precursor B cells that can generate a type of HIV broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs). The results, published on May 30 in the journal Nature Immunology, represent a promising, gradual advance toward creating a preventive HIV vaccine.
HIV is genetically diverse making the virus difficult to target with a vaccine, but bNAbs may overcome that hurdle because they bind to parts of the virus that remain constant even when it mutates. Germline targeting is an immune system-stimulating approach that guides naïve (precursor) B cells to develop into mature B cells that can produce bNAbs. A class of bNAbs called 10E8 is a priority for HIV vaccine development because it neutralizes a particularly broad range of HIV variants.

Scientists Unveil the Secret Sex Life of Coral
A new study utilizing aquarium data has uncovered the key factors that orchestrate mysterious synchronized coral spawning.
Corals play an essential role in ocean ecosystems, and like many organisms, they are under threat from climate change and other human activities. To better protect coral, it’s first necessary to understand them, in particular their reproductive life cycle, which only happens once a year.
For the first time, researchers have produced a model for coral spawning, based on various environmental factors. They achieved this by tapping an often overlooked source of aquatic knowledge, an aquarium.
Coral Biology and Reproduction
Given their branching shapes or waving tendrils, you would be forgiven for thinking of coral as the trees of the sea. But they are really colonies of small anemones, some of which form sturdy structures which are often the familiar shapes we see in reefs. As they are not plants, they don’t reproduce using seeds, but actually reproduce as animals do, with eggs and sperm. The way they do this, though, is mysterious and rare to see.

From Ice Age to Geological Wonderland: The Rapid Transformation of Adam’s Inlet
Adam’s Inlet, previously covered by thick ice, is now ice-free and features braided rivers, landslide debris, and alluvial fans spread across a dynamic landscape in Glacier Bay National Park.
From a geological perspective, Adam’s Inlet in Alaska has undergone major changes in the blink of an eye. Just 130 years ago, the inlet was covered by ice hundreds of meters thick. Today, it is ice-free.
Geomorphological Transformations
The inlet, which drains into the East Arm of Glacier Bay, lies within Glacier Bay National Park. “Since the end of the Little Ice Age about 150 years ago, Glacier Bay has seen deglaciation on a scale almost unseen anywhere else on Earth,” said Dan Shugar, a University of Calgary geomorphologist. “In Adam’s Inlet, the retreat of the ice has exposed a remarkable landscape. Steep slopes, glacial rivers, ocean tides, and sediment are smashing together to create a geological wonderland.”

Mediterranean Diet Tied to 23% Lower Risk of Death in Landmark 25-Year Study
Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital have explored and analyzed the fundamental reasons that might account for the Mediterranean diet’s 23 percent decrease in overall mortality risk among American women.
Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital have explored and evaluated the potential underlying mechanisms that could account for the 23 percent decrease in all-cause mortality risk among American women following the Mediterranean diet.
The health benefits of the Mediterranean diet have been reported in multiple studies, but there is limited long-term data on its effects on U.S. women and little understanding of why the diet may reduce the risk of death.

Microscopic Marvel: A Photonic Device that Could Change Physics and Lasers Forever
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute researchers have developed the first topological quantum simulator device in the strong light-matter interaction regime that operates at room temperature, revolutionizing quantum studies and laser efficiency, and making advanced research more accessible.
Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) have fabricated a device no wider than a human hair that will help physicists investigate the fundamental nature of matter and light. Their findings, published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, could also support the development of more efficient lasers, which are used in fields ranging from medicine to manufacturing.
The device is made of a special kind of material called a photonic topological insulator. A photonic topological insulator can guide photons, the wave-like particles that make up light, to interfaces specifically designed within the material while also preventing these particles from scattering through the material itself.

Scientists Race To Perfect New Oral COVID-19 Treatment Poised To Replace Paxlovid
Rutgers researchers are advancing a potential new COVID-19 treatment, Jun12682, which is effective in animal studies and compatible with other medications, unlike the current leading treatment, Paxlovid.
Researchers at Rutgers believe they are among the lead in developing an oral COVID-19 treatment that could supplement or replace Paxlovid, an antiviral drug that aids in preventing hospitalizations among high-risk patients.
Their report, published in the journal Science, shows that an alternative medication, a viral papain-like protease inhibitor, inhibits disease progression in animals, a necessary step before human drug trials.
