Homestead Garden Updates ~ Road Trip ~ Catch Of The Day
A walk through our garden in the morning after we finish our work. Road trip to Alpena on the great Lakes. And a good catch for the day.
We are getting up and working early these days due to the extreme heat. It gets up in the 90s almost every day now so we have to use the morning hours to get anything done outside.
Melanie and I are also now watering the garden every day to increase our yield.
I raked the last garden plot out and then we planted our sprouted plants.
One plant, buckwheat, will certainly do well. We should expect a good harvest from the buckwheat because it is a fast growing crop. I read online that 100 sq feet of buckwheat should give us a nice harvest. That would mean one of my rows at 4 feet wide by about 25 feet long. I think I will till another row and see what we get.
We hope to become self sufficient one day and providing all of our own food is the biggest part of it.
I may set up a hoop house over the corn later in the season to extend our growing time. We had a few bad starts due to ground squirrels destroying our seedlings.
Melanie and I had to go to Alpena for some paperwork so we made a nice day of it while there.
We walked on the beach of Lake Huron. The water is so clean and clear.
We picked up some driftwood on the beach. We plan to use it for crafting back home. Both of us has our own ideas how to use it.
I plan to laser engrave images into the wood for sale on our Recycled Pallet Wood Products website.
Later on the way home we dropped a fishing line into Thunder Bay River and I caught one of the largest perch I ever saw. We took it home for dinner.
Our chickens stay outside every day now so that they can get grass and bugs. This offsets our food costs while the birds are growing.
I will be putting the small meat birds in with the larger ones this week. They are getting strong enough to run with the big boys now.

Hottest Day Yet On The Homestead
It hit 100 degrees yesterday in the shade at our place. We are only able to work in the early mornings and just before dark these days.
We are still gardening heavily when the weather permits though.
Melanie got a package full of beads. She is so happy and excited to get crafting with these.
In town it was 20 degrees cooler than at our place. The lake really makes a difference and keeps the temperature milder than at our place.

Homestead Gardening & Making Our Own Chicken Sausages & Burgers
Melanie and I are still working in the garden. We made our own homemade chicken sausages and burgers from our homestead chickens.
We are cooking a lot with out solar cooker. It keeps the heat out of the house on a hot summer day and reduces our energy bill.
Melanie and I are working the garden every day now. I am staking up the tomatoes so that they will grow larger and better. I put the last of our metal stakes in the ground and then started tying twine around the tomatoes to keep them off the ground.
As the tomatoes grow taller we can keep tying them up higher on the stakes. This will give us better access to the tomatoes later on. And it provides better air flow underneath the plants to prevent disease. Plus tomatoes grow better when staked up.
Melanie and I made our own chicken sausages and burgers using the hand crank meat grinder.
Melanie made up her own recipe with an idea she got from the internet. With the grinder we have you grind up the meat in one pass and then process sausages with the second pass.
We ended up with 15 sausages and 4 chicken burgers.
This was the legs and thighs from our own 6 meat birds that we grew right here on the homestead.

Back To The Homestead Working In Off Grid Wood Shop & More
Back on the homestead after our trip to Mackinaw Michigan we got right back to work again. Melanie cleaned up inside the house and unpacked our gear while I worked outside on the land and animals.
I started working in the garden where I plan to stake up the tomatoes. I pulled out all the posts and string that marked our rows. I am going to reuse the string to tie up the tomatoes.
In the off grid electronics lab I used the laser wood burner to etch some patterns in pallet wood. Then in the wood shop I cut out the forms and make some lighthouse souvenirs.
I made two different sizes and each one will have various options available. Please tell me what you think.
The cool thing about these is that I made them out of recycled pallet wood and fully off the grid. Literally the entire process was powered by my solar panels.
Someone sent me a package with some handheld CB radios. We can use these in the fall when I am out hunting. Melanie and I can reach each other in case of emergency.

McGulphin Point Lighthouse In Mackinaw Michigan
Thanks to a viewer who told us about this spot we went to McGulphin Point Lighthouse in Mackinaw Michigan. This lighthouse is just a few miles outside of the city itself but is well worth the trip.
This lighthouse is being restored to working conditions and is being set up to look like it did when it was still in operation.
The entrance is by donation which is nice compared to most of the higher priced attractions these days.
Melanie and I went up to the top of the lighthouse for the spectacular views of the Mackinaw Bridge and the city itself a few miles away.
We also went down to the beach where the McGulphin Point rock is supposed to be. This is reported to have been discovered before Plymouth Rock and is supposed to be much larger as well.
People in the area are trying to increase knowledge of this rock and its history.
Melanie and I could not actually find the rock though. It measures 33 feet across but it must be under water at this time because the water levels are very high.
This rock was used to aid sailors in finding the depth of the lake.

Free Energy Cooking With The GoSun Sport Solar Oven
We have been cooking for free with the energy of the sun using the GoSun Sport solar cooker this summer. Read the full details here: http://www.thedoityourselfworld.com/articles/article.php?id=11462
Since we got the GoSun Sport solar stove we have cooked just about every meal when the sun is shining.
This includes anything from bread to the main course to dessert. We have baked, fried and slow cooked with this oven.
We have had muffins, dinner rolls, chicken dishes, fish, hot dogs and more. We both really love this stove now.
And the best thing is that this is truly free energy. We are cooking with the power of the sun at no cost to us.
And we are keeping the heat outside during hot, sunny days. Plus we are saving propane when cooking for free with the solar oven.
We have taken this to BBQs, fishing and to the cabin as well. The stove folds neatly up for transport. We toss it into the back seat of the truck and go.
Thank you GoSun for an awesome product.

Harvested Chickens Today But Not On Video
We processed six of our meat chickens. We did not record the process though but we showed them before and after the process.
Our six oldest birds were ready for the table. They are the first meat birds I ever had so it was an experiment for us both.
They grow very fast and are usually ready for the table in about 8 to 12 weeks. We had ours semi free ranging and cage free all day so they got a lot of exercise. It took them longer to fill out for us.
We did it carefully so that none of the birds saw what was going on and had no fear. For them it was just another day.
In the kitchen Melanie processed the meat for the freezer while I cleaned up outside.
We have a freezer full of meat now.
Our next batch of chickens will be ready in about a month or so. They are halfway there.
The bigger birds were using up three gallons of water a day and six quarts of food each day. It was just way too much for us to keep up with.
I also worked in the chicken coop quite a bit. I split up the two sets of chicks by groups. We have the buff orpingtons and the meat bird chicks.
Now there are in separate brooders so that I can care for them better according to their needs.
The meat birds use more water and food than the little orpingtons. The meat birds now have a 3 quart water container and will have two quarts of food.
The orpingtons will have 1.5 quarts of food and two quarts of water.
The larger birds have a 3 gallon food container and a 3 gallon water container.
Now I dont have to work as hard each day on the birds.

Baby Shower With The Family
We went down to visit my family this weekend for the baby shower. Melanie got to open all the gifts while everyone watched.
We had a good time. There was a buffet meal with some light and healthy foods. Then there was dessert, not so healthy but still good. Melanie made her own cake and everyone loved it. She used all natural ingredients and made a blueberry cake. She made her own whipped cream topping too.
We literally filled the car with gifts that we had received for the baby. There are many useful things. The clothes ranged from 0 months to the first year. This is very helpful for us so we will not has as much expense during the first year of the baby.

HOT Day Using Solar Energy & Property Walk Around
It was in the 90s again at the homestead. We are using the power of the sun to dry food, heat water, power our home and more.
I put out some no trespassing signs in the late afternoon hours. We had been in town and the hardware store had a good price on signs so I bought a pack.
I am going to heavily mark and label our property this summer to prevent hunters and vandals. Well, it wont prevent vandals but it sure can give the police a bit more of a push to help us.
I have been told again and again that no trespassing signs are necessary to get the police to respond to reports of vandalism. As if those should be needed to stop people from damaging our vehicles. But hey, whatever it takes.
Melanie and I have been gathering blueberries every day. We have about 15 to 17 pounds put away now. And we hope to keep picking until the season is done.
I put our chickens outside every morning to get fresh air, grass and bugs. This greatly offsets our food costs. In the chicken coop they eat about 1.5 gallons of food per day. Outside they only use about 2 quarts per day. That is a huge savings.
Later on I take the camera out and give you a little bit of a walk around the edge of the property. One day I will take the bike and the action camera out and give you a real tour of the place.
We have 16 acres of wild, forested land full of blueberries, cranberries, blackberries and other wild edibles. And we are taking advantage of this to the fullest extent we can each day.

Picked Up 30 More Chickens For The Homestead
It was the hottest day yet here on the homestead at 96 degrees F in the shade. We went to get chicks to finish off our flock for the year.
In the morning Melanie and I went out for a walk which turned out to be a blueberry picking time. Then we ended up working in the garden a little bit.
I strung up some more peas while Melanie planted some seeds which she had sprouted.
Then it was already getting hot.
We had an early lunch at 11:30 and left in our air conditioned car to get our 15 chicks that we had ordered long ago. We bought and paid for 15 Buff Orpingtons on the 12th of June. We had to pay in advance.
The store forgot to order them the next week. On the following week we kept calling into the store and they always said our birds were not there.
Finally the next week, after the 4th of July holidays, someone said yes, our birds are in. So we drove the 45 minutes to get our birds.
When we got there, the birds had been sold. They said our birds had been there over a week and were sold. Miscommunication on the part of the store employees.
So we ordered our birds again and waited.
Finally on this day our little birds were there waiting for us.
I had planned to order 15 more Cornish mix meat birds next time I was in. But they happened to have 30 birds on hand so we bought them and brought home our new birds.
We now have about 60 chickens on our homestead. The first 6 meat birds are about ready for processing. The next 10 meat birds will be ready in a few weeks.
And the next 15 will take about 8 to 12 weeks to be ready for the table. This gives us enough time to process and use the birds as time goes on.
The 15 Buff Orpingtons will be dual purpose birds. They will be kept for laying eggs and for meat as needed through the winter months. This gives us a bird every week for 15 weeks through the winter after we use up our first stock of meat birds.
A package arrived in the mail containing a remote speaker and adapter meant for my GoPro camera. I hope it will work.
It was 96 degrees in the shade in the afternoon so I called it a day and tried to beat the heat.

Replace 99 Olds Aurora Accessory Belt Tensioner & Belt
I finally got the money together to fix my Oldsmobile Aurora. I ordered an accessory belt tensioner and belt from Amazon with free 2 day shipping due to having Amazon Prime.
The job itself went very fast and easy. I had the shield removed already in order to see what parts I needed so half the job was nearly done.
The two bolts which held the shield in place had to be removed next. This allowed me to remove the belt tensioner pully assembly. Next I was able to remove the old belt.
The belt was actually in very good shape considering that the pulley had been broken in half.
But I put in the new belt anyway and will keep the old belt as a spare.
And last I put the new tensioner pulley in place with its two retaining bolts.
I had to use a 13mm socket and wrench to compress the tensioner pulley spring so I could get the belt onto the pulley.
And then I put the shield back on with the two nuts. I am missing a bolt for the shield which I have to replace one day.
And last there is a plastic box that goes onto the air filter housing which I had removed to do the job.
And that was it.
I put the battery back into the car. I had it out because the car had been sitting for a while and I needed to recharge the battery.
And the car started right up.
Melanie and I went to town. We had been stranded at home for about ten days now.
I got my parts on Amazon here:

Very HOT ~ Packages Arrived ~ Guess What I Did Today
It was over 90 degrees in the shade yesterday. Some packages arrived in the mail containing my car parts and some gifts.
I put two wheelbarrow loads of chicken bedding on the garden. I spread it carefully between the plants, trying not to touch the plants directly. I got the idea from seeing how green the grass is where the chickens have been. After a few rain storms the grass really gets dark green and grows better.
So I figured I can do the same thing for the garden plants if I am careful not to get any directly on the plants.
My car parts arrived in the mail. Plus a few large boxes. I got some huge and heavy duty tarps. Plus a quadcopter with a built in camera. This is going to be a lot of fun here on the homestead. Once I learn how to fly it well I plan to make some videos with it.
Can you guess what I did with my time today? The next video will tell you.

Why I Never Have Video Evidence
I have held off on telling people about this but since my trolls are fully aware then there is no need to hide it from my normal viewers anymore.
My video cameras have no real night vision. They have never yet taken any good video footage at night.
I have tried many different types of cameras through the years from home video systems to trail cameras.
I have no good luck with them.
For example the last four nights something has been digging under my chicken fence regularly. So I have a camera out there.
I got nothing on video.
All I ever see is myself on video during the day but nothing at night.
Lights and motion sensing lights only blind the cameras and make a bright blurry mess at night.
I have always used only budget systems. I have never been able to afford good video cameras. This is the problem of course.
I have had the Harbor Freight video surveillance system and took it right back after seeing nothing at night.
I have a very nice home system but the cameras are no good at night. The DVD and main device is nice though. All I need are some good cameras for it.
I have had many different game cameras and most often they trigger too slow or capture nothing at all such as the example video shown here.
Now something triggered the camera but it must have started to record too slow. Or the video is just that bad and whatever is digging under the fence is just not visible.
Literally anything closer to the camera at night will show up bright, making everything else too dark. This, I think, is the main problem.

Beautifying Our Almost Fully Off Grid Homestead
We had a very busy day at the homestead working in the yard and garden. Melanie picked a mess of blueberries while I worked in the yard.
In the morning I shoveled the last of the mulch onto the new garden plot walkway. Then I put soil around the potatoes so that they can provide more food for us.
Later after it rains and the soil settles some I will put some sand up around them as well.
I got the Snapper lawn mower going again and finished mowing the entire yard. I also cut some paths through the woods and out by the orchard. I cut a path out to the road on the other side too.
I also cut the edges of the property along the roads. I figure I mowed the grass for about two hours on this day.
Melanie picked a mess of blueberries while I worked. She had a seat that she moved along as she worked. She got another 3 or 4 pounds in a short time.
I later got out the push mower and did all the trim work in the yard. I also mowed around the orchard trees and around the electric fence line.
I mowed a path out into the woods a ways so that Melanie and I can get out there to pick berries without fear of ticks.
The place is really looking nice now.
Melanie put the onions into the new garden plot where I had put the mulch for her to walk on. These are the ones we got for free recently.
It felt good to sit back and see what we did on this day.

Busy Day At The Nearly Off Grid Homestead
I strung up our peas in the garden and worked all day on the property. I got my old Snapper riding lawn mower going and started to cut the grass in comfort.
We picked blueberries on this day. You saw that video already. So far we got about 11.5 pounds of berries all together and are still picking more each day.
We are using our GoSun solar oven all the time now. We really love it. This saves us energy when cooking and keeps the heat outside. It feels so good to be cooking with free solar energy.
We had some blueberry muffins baked in the solar oven. Later we loaded it up with our dinner and left that to slow cook for a couple hours. Boy it was so good. The flavors all mixed in nicely.
I got the Snapper riding lawn mower fixed today. I put in the drive disc and then cleaned the carburetor. You have seen those videos already.
Then I started to mow the lawn with my riding lawn mower. It sure beats pushing a mower on foot. This is a very old machine though and needs some love and care. It looks like its an oil burner but it could just need cleaning out.
The engine smokes badly at first but then clears up a bit and runs strong. I cut the lawn till I ran out of gas and then refilled the tank but it did not run well after that. I will check it out again later.

Cleaning Carburetor On Old Snapper Riding Lawn Mower
I removed and cleaned out the carburetor on my old Snapper riding lawn mower to see if I can get it running again. I bought this for $20 in New York and brought it back with me.
I knew it had not run in years but I had no idea what the condition of the engine was internally at the time.
I pulled the carburetor off the engine of my Snapper riding lawn mower and took it to my "work bench" which was a piece of cardboard on the ground. This was the most comfortable place for me to work at the time.
I was right next to the garden tractor so I did not have to move tools or parts around much.
I took apart the carburetor and fully cleaned it inside and out. I used carburetor cleaner and then an air compressor to blow out any dirt or particles in the carb.
Then I put it all back together and put the carburetor on the old pull start 6 HP Tecumseh engine.
I gave it a few pulls and it started up. It sputtered a lot though and blew some smoke.
I think this is an oil burner but it could just be garbage in the engine. I put some seafoam in the gas and ran it a while.

Fast & Easy Replacement Of Snapper Mower Friction Drive Disc
I finally got the friction drive disc for my Snapper riding lawn mower. Today I put it on and the job was very fast and easy.
I had to first cut the lining to fit the inside of the disc. It just presses in and stays in place.
Outside I got my tools together and got to work on the Snapper.
I had to use a socket to hold the center nut in place while I used a wrench to remove the four retaining nuts. The old disc retaining plate fell off. Behind that was a fiber disc.
Then the old drive wheel came off easily.
All I had to do was to put the new drive disc in place. Then the fiber disc and the metal retaining disc.
Next I reversed the process of putting the nuts back in place using a socket wrench to hold the wheel from turning while I tightened the nuts.
The job was done. That fast and easy.
This literally took me longer to get the tools together than it took to do the job.

Blueberries Blueberries Blueberries
Melanie and I went out to pick blueberries. Our property is covered in them. There are literally blueberries all over the place.
We picked 3 pounds the first day and went out the next day to pick another 4.5 pounds of blueberries.
We hope to gather enough blueberries to put away for the entire year.
There is another little plant that looks like a cranberry but I am not sure. I would be happy to hear from you all.

Garden Work & Building A Chicken Run & Still Raining
We are still gardening in the hope of providing most of the food we need for a year. I put up a chicken run area for our birds to play. It rained all day again but I kept working anyway.
I raked the soil in our raised bed garden area flat so that we can plant the vegetables we recently got for free. It was raining as I worked but I have to get it done. It has rained all but 3 days in the last 4 weeks.
It does not always rain all day but there are usually short storms with lightning and then sun in between. It is strange. Today though we had no lightning so I worked through it.
Our garden is finally starting to grow. I think the warmer weather and the rain are both helping. We certainly do not have to water the garden at all anymore.
I cleared up the construction zone by the chicken coop in order to set up a chicken run area. I put all the wood in a trailer that I got for hauling stuff around the property.
A trailer is very valuable on a homestead for moving things around. Without it things start to pile up or projects get delayed.
When I am finished with the chicken coop I will haul the wood out behind the wood shop and stack it neatly under some sort of shelter.
Next I pounded some stakes in the ground to hold the new chicken fence. A neighbor had given me some heavy duty chain link fence a while back and I wanted to use it for the chickens.
This is very heavy stuff and hard to work with alone but I got it done.
When the chicken run was finished I cut an opening in the chicken coop for the birds to come and go through.
I will open it in the mornings and close it during the night to protect the birds after they go to bed.
On days when it is raining or we are not going to be home this will be perfect for me to let the birds have some fresh air and freedom.
Other days I will put the chickens out in chicken tractors in the yard to eat fresh greens and bugs.
The birds were loving it when I let them out.
