Entertainment News | Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy Sends Smoke Signals | Sells Her Disney Adjacent Home After Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny FLOP | Featuring @WDW_Pro of That Park Place Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy puts her Malibu, CA home up for sale and that may just another warning sign her days are numbered. She and her husband, Frank Marshall, purchased this home in 2015, around the time she was renewed as Lucasfilm President by The Walt Disney Company for the first time. Kathleen Kennedy grew up in Northern California and still has residences there. Lucasfilm's corporate offices are also based in San Francisco, CA. Acquiring a Los Angeles area home after the Disney purchase in 2012 was likely a strategic move since Lucasfilm was now tied to Disney and much of the actual production for Lucasfilm projects under Disney are done IN Los Angeles at Disney owned studios. Having a home there for extended stays would make sense. But now Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are selling that home (roughly a 40 min drive from Burbank and Disney corporate headquarters) so perhaps this is another warnings sign she's planning her exit. We've heard that Kennedy will enter contract renegotiations in the next week or two ahead of her current contract's expiration in late September/October of 2024, next year. We've also heard that this negotiation is more of a severance negotiation than potential renewal. Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are now in their 70s and retirement would seem imminent at this point, particularly considering the completion and release of Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny (and its box office failure) which is the one big project Kennedy really wanted to complete. A recent filing by Disney / Lucasfilm / Blue Stockings LTD in the UK shows the latest Star Wars Disney Plus show THE ACOLYTE (currently in post production) spent about $50 Million USD in the pre-production phase alone through September 24th, 2022. This would have included writing, art and set design along with construction, props and costumes, and opening a lease with the brand new multi-billion dollar soundstage facility in Britain, Shinfield Studios. If we extrapolate the final costs from those of pre-production when compared to similar projects in the past, The Acolyte final cost will likely be in the $250M range. Disney, like many studios often elect to conduct physical production in the UK to take advantage of lucrative tax incentives like the UK Film Tax Credit program, which offers up to 25% back on qualified production expenses made in the country. The problem ultimately is that Disney Plus has struggled GREATLY to financially perform thanks to enormous costs of production for what Bob Iger refers to as "Core Content" like Star Wars and Marvel products. Iger recently made cuts to production and content but those cuts are for projects going FORWARD, not those already greenlit (contracted) AND well underway. The BARBIE Movie (2023) from Mattel and Warner Bros starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is set to release with what is expected to be a perhaps a $100M domestic box office opening projection (if not potentially higher). The production budget for Barbie is reported to be $100M as per The-Numbers.com but other sources suggest $145M. I'm sure we will have some clarity in coming days. It's also been reported the marketing budget for the film is in the vicinity of $100M itself, which seems about right for a film of this caliber considering the popularity of the intellectual property involved. But will the huge box office opening hold up over time as some early viewers have expressed disgust at the messaging in the film and changes to characters. One of the things that made Super Mario Bros such a massive hit was that it stayed tru to the characters and avoided and modern day messaging for audiences. Barbie may not be made in the same vein.
